Chapter 101

Jane shook her head. “No.”

“The wall Ivana mentioned is actually the structural layer of the mission. When souls get pulled in, they get funneled right into the mission’s core. I felt that pull myself when I was inside the cat.

“But the place I’m talking about isn’t inside the mission.”

Lana and Lyra exchanged a glance.

“Janey, take your time,” Lana said.

Jane’s soul lingered in the air for a couple of seconds. “Honestly, I don’t know where it was.”

Lana’s fingers froze on her knee. “You don’t know?”

“Most of the time, I wasn’t really conscious. After I was forced into the cat’s body, my human memories got buried, and I could hardly sense anything.

Her voice dropped a little. “But once, for just a few seconds, I became lucid.

“In those few seconds, I saw it.”

Lyra leaned forward. “What did you see?”

“Wraiths,” Jane said.

Her soul flickered. “There were tons of them, all sorts of shapes. Some looked human, some were totally not. They were all crammed together in one place.

“I only got a glimpse before my mind went fuzzy again.”

The room fell silent.

Lana pulled her hand back from her knee and rested it on the armrest, tapping her fingers. “Could it be the place where they’re transformed?”

Jane looked at her.

Lana gathered her thoughts. “Janey, you were just a soul, but the game shoved you into a cat’s body, wiped your memories. and turned you into one of those Wraiths in the mission.

“In the round before last, in the Cursed Forest mission, there was a Wraith tree.

“The memories in that tree were yours. Lyra checked with the Scrying Orb, and it was definitely your memories.

“But your soul wasn’t in that tree.

Jane’s face fell. “A tree? What tree?”

“An ice tree, another Wraith,” Lyra chimed in.

Jane was silent for a long moment. “I don’t remember.”

That’s normal. Your memories were wiped. But it proves something: the game can split a person’s soul and memories and use them separately.

Chapter 101

Your soul got stuffed into a cat, your memories into a tree. One set of raw materials, split into two Wraiths

Lana jotted down the info, just about to dig deeper, when Jane suddenly cut in, her voice picking up speed.

“Wait, I just remembered something.”

Everyone turned to look at her.

“Besides the ten cats in the mission, there was an extra one.”

Lyra’s hand froze. “One?”

“Yeah. I only saw it once,” Jane said as her soul floated forward, as if she was searching for the spot in her memory.

That cat wasn’t with us. It was up above us, larger than any of us. I couldn’t really see its fur, but I could sense it was way above us in rank.

“I have no clue what it was supposed to be in the game.”

Lana frowned. “So there were eleven cats in the mission?”

“Lana, do you remember my first mission?” Lyra asked.

“Yeah, Rose Manor,” Lana replied.

“Exactly,” Lyra said, holding up a finger. “That mission had ten Wraiths, and that was the official count. But there was someone else in the manor, the guy I stole the Compass from.

“He wasn’t one of the ten Wraiths, but he could guide them, tell them where the players were hiding.”

Lana remembered. In the first round, Lyra had grabbed the Compass from the Manor Lord and later used it to throw off the Wraiths’ movements.

“The cat Janey mentioned probably serves the same role as the Manor Lord,

“Every mission doesn’t just have the obvious Wraiths. There’s always an extra character behind the scenes, someone higher up who oversees and coordinates everything, kind of like the mission’s admin,” Lyra said.

Lana nodded. “That logic checks out.”

Lyra cocked her head, then suddenly frowned. “But something’s off.”

“What’s wrong?” Lana asked.

“After the first round at Rose Manor, I never saw that kind of extra character again in the next three missions.

“I always thought each mission was different, but if Jane is right, there should be a higher-level character in every mission So why did that role disappear after the first one?”

The room went quiet as Lana’s mind raced. Suddenly, a wild thought popped into her head.

Lana wondered, ‘What if, after Lyra swiped the Manor Lord’s Compass in the first round, the admin in the later mussions got spooked and decided to hide so she wouldn’t target them too?”

As soon as the idea crossed her mind, Lana shook her head.

Lana thought, ‘Seriously, why would the game be scared of a player?’

But then she hesitated. ‘Lyra does push the game’s limits. Maybe it’s not impossible?’

Chapter 101

Forget it. She would think about it later.

Janey, you only saw that cat once?” Lana asked.

“Just once,” Jane said with a nod. “It wasn’t with us. I was only lucid for a few seconds, so I didn’t get a chance to see more.

Lyra didn’t push further. Instead, she turned to Jane, thinking about what Jane had just said. “Jane, that place you mentioned, the one full of Wraiths, can you remember what it was like?”

“I really don’t know. When I was lucid, all I saw were tons of Wraiths, packed together. Nothing else, Jane replied.

“Did you hear anything?” Lyra asked.

“Yeah, there was this constant buzzing, coming from all around me,” Jane said.

Lyra thought for a bit, then looked up at Lana. “Lana.”

Lana looked at her.

“Jane described a place swarming with Wraiths of all shapes, and that nonstop buzzing noise.

“Could it be a Wraith invasion zone in the real world?”

The room went quiet for a moment. Zoe was the first to react, blurting out, “Why would Wraiths from the game show up in real life?”

Lyra turned to her, looking like it was obvious. “Then where do the real-world Wraiths come from?”
