Chapter 109

Chapter 109

Before Lyra and Jane could get a closer look, the Wraith lying on the ground suddenly jerked its head up.

Its mouth tore open like a crack in the ground, slimy strands stretching and snapping between its jaws as its head snapped toward Lyra and Jane, fixing them with its gaze.

Two cloudy eyes rolled into its empty sockets.

Jane’s soul stepped forward, shielding Lyra. “Something’s off. It’s spotted us. Aren’t we supposed to be one of them?”

Before she could finish, the creature sprang up on all fours and lunged at them with lightning speed.

Jane’s soul shot forward, soul power streaming from her arms and weaving into a white, rope-like strand in midair.

Lyra drew Wraithslayer from her waist, the blade flashing with a cold white gleam in the dim light. She held her ground. eyes locked on the Wraith as it lunged, a faint smirk playing at her lips.

“Looks like we’re not one of them after all,” Lyra said.

Jane didn’t even have time to ask why before her soul power slammed into the Wraith’s head.

The white, rope-like strand wrapped around the Wraith’s neck from both sides and twisted violently.

Crack!

The Wraith’s head was ripped clean off, black liquid splattering everywhere. The head hit the ground, while the body stumbled forward a couple of steps, knees slamming into the floor, but it didn’t collapse.

Jane’s soul floated above, peering down.

At the Wraith’s severed neck, something started writhing. In no time, black tentaclés snaked out, one, two, five, then a dozen, twisting and squirming in the air, stretching toward the head lying on the floor.

The tentacles wrapped around the head, pulled it back in, and pressed it back onto the neck, fusing it together bit by bit.

Jane’s soul shuddered. “What the hell is this thing?”

She didn’t even blink, another surge of soul power burst out from her, and before the head and neck could finish fusing, she brought the white strand crashing down, tearing the head apart all over again.

The tentacles shot out once more, reaching for the head and dragging it back.

“It just won’t die?” Jane’s voice shot up, full of disbelief.

Lyra’s eyes stayed fixed on those writhing tentacles, giving Wraithslayer a quick twirl in her hand.

“Jane, step aside,” Lyra said.

She tightened her grip on the hilt, and with a mental command, Wraithslayer’s blade began to grow, shifting from dagger to short sword, then stretching into a long blade.

Jane’s soul darted aside.

Lyra gripped the hilt with both hands, locked onto the Wraith’s severed neck, and chopped down with all her strength.

Chapter 109

The tentacles were sliced clean off, black liquid spraying everywhere as the Wraith’s body staggered back.

Lyra sheathed her blade, shooting a quick glance at the stump. New tentacles were already wriggling out, growing back in seconds.

Lyra raised an eyebrow. “Still at it?”

She brought her blade down for another strike.

Chopped off, but the tentacles just sprouted again.

Lyra swung again.

Gone, then back again.

Lyra’s mouth twitched as she stared down at the writhing, regenerating mess on the ground. She hefted her blade high.

This time, she wasn’t messing around with single chops anymore.

Squelch! Squelch! Squelch!

Wraithslayer flashed through the air, raining down blow after blow in a wild frenzy. In just a minute, she’d chopped everything, tentacles, neck, shoulders, chest, waist, into stuffing, turning the whole thing into ground meat.

Black chunks splattered everywhere, leaving the Wraith on the floor as nothing but a heap of chopped-up meat.

Jane hovered nearby, watching the scene unfold, her lips twitching in disbelief.

She couldn’t help thinking. ‘Lyra would make a killer chef. Look at that chopping, fine and even, like she’s prepping a meatloaf mix.

“Seriously?” Jane shook herself out of it. “Jane, get it together. This is not the time for random thoughts!”

Lyra finally stopped, Wraithslayer’s tip pointing at the ground as she caught her breath.

Both of them stared down at the mess on the floor.

Shockingly, the chopped-up meat was still writhing. Tiny black tentacles sprouted from the edges of every piece, reaching out, tangling together, and pulling themselves toward the center.

It was fusing back together.

Lyra’s eyes narrowed.

Jane, watching the scene that was so messed up it should’ve been blurred out, couldn’t help but shudder and took a step back. “It’s been chopped up like ground meat and it’s still coming back together?”

Lyra crouched down, staring at the writhing chunks, lost in thought. “No wonder no one who came in here ever made it out.”

She stood up again, swung Wraithslayer down, cleaving the biggest chunk, the head, right down the middle.

The head split in two. Lyra yanked her blade out, about to go in for another strike.

“Wait.” Jane’s voice called out from behind.

Lyra froze, her blade hovering just above the head. “What’s wrong?”

Jane’s soul floated over to Lyra, eyes locked on the split-open head, a spark of excitement flickering in her gaze.

Chapter 109

“I saw something,” Jane said.

“What did you see?” Lyra asked.

“Energy, Jane replied, pointing right at the crack in the head.

“When you split the head, something started leaking out. It was small, but I could totally sense it.” Jane said.

Lyra glanced down, but all she could see was black tissue and liquid oozing from the crack.

“I can’t see anything,” Lyra said.

“That’s probably because you’re a soul made by the Transform Card, not a true soul. Your senses just aren’t as sharp,” Jane explained.

Jane’s soul leaned in, her palm hovering above the split head. “Let me give it a shot.”

She pressed her palm down, almost touching the crack. White light surged from her hand, and a barely-there wisp of energy was pulled out from the split. For a moment, Jane’s soul outline flashed bright.

She absorbed it.

All the writhing meat on the floor froze at once. The tentacles stopped sprouting, shriveled into brittle black threads, and dropped to the floor, dead.

The chopped-up meat stopped merging, finally dead for real.

Lyra crouched down, watching the scene unfold. “Jane, how does it feel?”

Jane flexed her soul-hand, turning it over and back, then squeezed her fist. “I think my soul power just got a boost.”

Jane sounded a little unsure, but after a moment she added, “Just a bit, not much, but yeah, it’s definitely stronger.”

Lyra’s eyes lit up. She shrank Wraithslayer back to dagger size, then pulled out her Soul Deck, flipping to Jane’s C Tier Tricolor Mimic Card and checking it out.

It was still C Tier.

“Why didn’t it level up?” Lyra asked.

Jane shook her head. “Maybe it’s just not enough yet.”
