Chapter 115
Chapter 115
The back-and-forth between Lyra and Ms. Reed left everyone in the room in stunned silence.
It was a perspective none of them had ever considered before.
Lyra sat in her chair, her fingers unconsciously twisting together.
To save a planet hanging by a thread.
The words echoed in her mind, crashing around again and again.
She remembered those hollow eyes in the Ghost Wall, lined up shoulder to shoulder, all facing outward. Their faces were blank, showing nothing, except when they quietly stepped aside for the ghosts to pass.
Lyra thought, “Wait, why do they let ghosts through? If Ms. Reed is right, are they welcoming their own kind into the line of
sacrifice?’
Lana’s hand, holding the marker, hovered over the whiteboard, but she couldn’t bring herself to write anything down.
Lana finally spoke, her throat feeling parched. “Ms. Reed, that’s one hell of a bold guess.”
Ms. Reed crossed her hands on the table, the wrinkles on the back of her hands overlapping like layer upon layer of ghosts. building up the Ghost Wall.
“Make bold guesses, but verify them carefully.” Ms. Reed sighed. Even she was startled by her own speculation. If it was true, then those invisible ghosts had done far more for the living than anyone could imagine.
“Now that we’ve figured out how to get into the Mist Zone, and we’ve proven that souls can move, fight, and even take down the Wraiths in there, the truth will come out sooner or later,” Ms. Reed said.
She scanned the room, taking in everyone’s faces. “We can’t rush it, but we can’t just ignore it either.”
Lana put the marker down, grabbed her cup, and took a long drink, trying to steady herself and clear her messy thoughts.
Lyra tilted her head, her fingers tangled in her hair. If Ms. Reed’s right, are any of those souls in the Ghost Wall Red? Or Sister Jo?
Lyra wondered, ‘Are any of them the ghosts who used to talk to me and tell me stories?”
Her fingers froze in her hair.
Lyra thought, ‘And is Dr. Hanson among them?’
The moment that thought popped into her head, Lyra’s breath caught. But Dr. Hanson is alive, she reminded herself.
Lyra slowly pulled her hand out of her hair, looking kind of down.
“Lyra?” Lana noticed the change in her face.
“It’s nothing.” Lyra managed a weak smile. “Just thinking about what Ms. Reed said, that’s all.”
“I have a question.” Jane’s voice suddenly cut through the silence, drawing everyone’s attention to her.
The Ghost Wall really does block the living. Lyra and I both saw it with our own eyes, no one alive can get through,” Jane
said.
“But there’s a catch,” Jane added.
Chapter 115
She paused for a moment. “The thing is, Lyra and I are the only ones who can actually see the ghosts and the Ghost Wall
Lyra nodded.
Jane continued, “But what about the people who can’t even see the Ghost Wall?”
Everyone looked at Jane, confused. ‘What does she mean by that?’ they wondered.
“The soldiers who went into the Mist Zone before, they didn’t have the Heavenly Eye, and they weren’t souls/They couldn’t see the ghosts,” Jane explained.
Jane’s soul drifted over toward Zoe. “Zoe, rewind the video a bit.”
Zoe tapped the controls, and the screen fast-forwarded past the fighting, stopping on a scene of ruins.
Shattered bricks, a broken rifle, and half a military boot.
You could hear everyone breathing in the conference room, it suddenly felt heavy.
Jane stared at the screen. “We found the belongings of the soldiers who went in before, inside the Ghost Wall.”
She turned to Lana. “What does that tell you?”
“So the living did make it through the Ghost Wall,” Lana finished.
“Exactly.” Jane nodded. “They couldn’t see the Ghost Wall, so they just walked straight in, right through a ten-meter-thick crowd of ghosts.”
Ms. Reed tapped her fingers on the table. “But we have no idea what price they paid for that.”
Jane’s soul trembled a little. “Can you even imagine it? A living person, not seeing a single ghost, just passing straight through thousands of souls without even knowing it.”
The conference room fell completely silent.
Lyra remembered what Red had said, when a living person passes through a ghost’s body, it really messes with the ghost.
Lyra wondered, ‘But what about the other way around?’
Lyra thought, ‘What happens to a living person when a ghost passes through’them?”
Just being near the Mist Zone had already made Zoe’s Vital Flame values drop by two. If they actually went in, they’d probably lose even more, or maybe pay some other price altogether.
Lyra’s back broke out in goosebumps.
Garrett stood up without a word and walked out of the conference room.
A few seconds later, he came back in, arms full of things.
Three neatly folded military uniforms, a broken rifle, a single combat boot, a pair of gloves, half a helmet, and a few pieces of broken communication equipment.
He set each item down on the conference table, moving so gently it was like he was afraid they might break.
These are the things Captain Sullivan and Major General Vance brought back from inside,” Garrett said, his voice thick in his throat. After he finished, he stepped back to his seat.
Lana walked over to the table, her hand reaching out, hesitating for a moment before finally touching the military uniform

on top.
She picked it up carefully, holding it with both hands, and turned it over. On the inside of the collar, there was a small identification tag sewn in. Lana’s eyes landed on it.
Name, ID number, blood type, unit designation.
Her lips moved.
“Wendy Marshall,” Lana said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Each name came out one by one, as if Lana had to force them past her lips.
She set the first uniform down and picked up the second.
“Donna Lewis,” Lana said, her voice barely above a whisper.
She picked up the third uniform.
“Jerry Lawson,” Lana said, her voice barely above a whisper.
After reading out the three names, Lana’s hand stayed on the uniform, her fingers clinging tightly to the fabric, refusing to let go.
Several people bowed their heads in silence.
Zoe gripped the armrest, her fingertips digging in so hard her knuckles turned white.
Wendy Marshall, Donna Lewis, Jerry Lawson.
She knew those names.
They were the third squad to enter on the day Sunvale fell, a six-person team, and none returned alive.
“There were six of them,” Zoe said, her voice rough. “We only found three sets of gear.”
