Chapter 143
Aside from Lina, nine other players received the game’s notification. Their faces betrayed a mix of emotions, but everyone instinctively hid the message, no one dared to speak up about it.
Lyra followed the game’s instructions and opened the treasure chest, revealing a delicate silver ring inside.
The game’s announcement echoed in her ears:
[Hidden Edge Ring: Wear it, and when you clench your fist, a needle-like spike just over an inch long pops out from the ring. perfect for sneak attacks. No usage limit.]
Lyra slipped the ring onto her right index finger and clenched her fist.
“Click.”
A silver spike popped out from the ring, its tip glinting in the light. When she let go of her fist, the spike slid back into the ring.
Lyra held her hand up to her face, inspecting the ring. It fit her finger perfectly, and unless you looked closely, you’d never notice the mechanism. She stared at it and let out an incredulous laugh.
“Seriously? That’s hilarious,” she muttered.
She leaned against the wardrobe, twirling the ring on her finger. ‘So that’s why I haven’t seen a single Wraith this round,’ she thought. Turns out, there aren’t any Wraiths at all, this time, the game wants us to kill each other’
With fifty players in the game, there was no way she was the only Hunter. The game usually picked ten Hunters, so there had to be nine more out there like her.
If there are ten Hunters, and each has to kill two people, that’s twenty in total. We’d have to wipe out half the players just to pass this round. ‘What’s the game up to this time?’ Lyra wondered.
Back when Wraiths were hunting, they could take out twice as many people, Wraiths were way better at this than people ever could be. ‘So why bother making us the Hunters this time?’ she thought.
Is the game running out of souls?’ Lyra wondered.
That can’t be right. Even if there are no souls, the game could just use memories to create Wraiths, like the ice tree. If that doesn’t work, it could always just bring in Wraiths from the invasion zones, she thought.
Then another thought hit Lyra. ‘Is the game actually scared I’ll seal away the souls and take them with me? Or maybe it’s still salty about me snatching those ten cats last round and doesn’t want me to pull that stunt again?’
Lyra was speechless. She thought, ‘Please tell me I’m wrong. If not, this game is shameless. It sent no Wraiths and made me the Hunter. Does it want me to kill people to repay the souls it lost?”
‘Ugh, whatever, she scoffed.
Lyra gave up trying to make sense of it and walked off. She would not hunt players herself. She would wait for Hunters to come to her; the game never named her teammates, so friendly fire was understandable.
Plus, Hunters are still players. If she takes out a Hunter, that should totally count as finishing the quest, right?
“Come on, Clara, let’s go wander around and see if there’s any more cool stuff to snag,” Lyra said.
“Let’s try to clean out every treasure chest in this maze.” she added.

Chapter 143
34
At Draconia Strategic Command, everyone was just as confused.
A Tech Specialist reported, “Report! So far, none of the fifty players’ live feeds have shown any Wraith entities”
Lana frowned. “Not a single one?”
“Not a single one. It’s been two minutes and seventeen seconds since the Hunters were announced, and there’s still no ogn of any Wraiths in any of the rooms,” the Tech Specialist replied.
Garrett stood up from his chair. “What’s going on? Where are the Hunters? Weren’t they supposed to show up?”
Ms. Reed’s fingers paused on the table.
Lana stared at the big screen. In all fifty feeds, the players were still rummaging through treasure chests, marking the walls. and keeping a wary eye on their surroundings. Those who found a chest were busy looking for a place to hide.
Not a single Wraith in sight, the whole thing felt weirdly calm.
“After all that chaos earlier, and now it’s suddenly dead quiet?” Ms. Reed’s voice turned grim. “Something’s off.”
Garrett frowned. “Could the Wraiths be invisible? Like Lyra’s stealth ability?”
“Definitely not.” Garrett shook his head before anyone else could answer. “It’s been over two minutes, if they were invisible. they’d have already nabbed someone. No way they’d be dragging their feet like this.”
Lana didn’t say anything. Her eyes scanned the screens until they landed on a player who had just opened a treasure chest and taken out the item inside. His face suddenly turned pale, looking really grim.
Lana turned to the Tech Specialist. “Tech Specialist.”
“Yes, ma’am.” the Tech Specialist replied.
“Bring up the footage of all fifty players finding treasure chests in their current rooms after the last two flips, and compare it with this round, Lana ordered.
“Yes, ma’am. the Tech Specialist answered.
The sound of keyboards tapping filled the room.
Ms. Reed leaned forward, scanning the screens until she locked onto the player whose face had suddenly gone pale.
On the feed, the player stood there gripping the item, gritting his teeth and looking seriously pissed off.
Ms. Reed’s breath caught. “There’s no description slip in the chest this time, that’s not how it was before! So
Carrett whipped his head around to look at them.
Ms. Reed closed her eyes for a moment. “If I’m not mistaken, there are no Wraiths this round. Looks like the Hunters are the players themselves.”
Lana added, “Pay special attention to the players who opened treasure chests this round, see if there are ten of them whose chests had only items inside, but no description slips.”
“Yes, ma’am.” the Tech Specialist replied.
The Command Center fell silent for three seconds.
