On the other side of the maze, Alex leaned against the wall, idly rolling the black chess piece between his fingers.
He heard the game announcement. Someone had beaten him to it. “I need to pick up the pace, Alex muttered, pushing/ open the door and heading east.
Lyra pushed open the door, but before she could step inside, she saw another player open the door on the opposite side of the room.
It was a short, narrow-shouldered man, Tanaka from Niphonia.
Tanaka saw her too, and the two of them locked eyes across the doorway.
Lyra smiled and stepped inside.
Tanaka’s eyes darted around, and he followed her in.
The room was a recreation parlor, with a mahjong table at its center, four chairs around it, and a small bookshelf in the corner stacked with several decks of playing cards and chess sets.
“Miss Lyra.” Tanaka’s Draconian was clumsy and twisted, his accent awkward.
Tanaka added, “Hello,” trying to sound friendly.
Lyra ignored him, running her fingers over the mahjong tiles on the table.
“Me have important news, want share with you, yes?” Tanaka said, his smile a bit too forced, hands clasped in front of him in an exaggerated show of respect.
Lyra tilted her head. “What news?” she asked.
Tanaka’s eyes lit up. He knew exactly how much loot Lyra had: multiple lottery draws, several S Tier items, and all those treasures from the game chests. If he could take her out, he’d be set for life.
His right hand brushed his left wrist. Under his sleeve was the weapon the game had given him: a hidden wrist guard with three poisoned needles. One scratch, and the toxin would spread in five seconds, fatal.
No matter how tough Lyra was, she was still human, and human skin could not stop poison. Tanaka swallowed hard, tamping down his excitement, and plastered an even bigger smile on his face.
“News is about Hunter, yes?” he said, taking a step forward.
Lyra didn’t move, just watched him.
Tanaka took another step. “This round’s Hunter…”
Another step, and they were just a step apart.
“It’s…” Tanaka said.
Tanaka suddenly jerked his left arm up, aiming the cuff straight at Lyra’s face. With a flick of his wrist, the hidden mechanism snapped open, a silver needle shot out like lightning.
Tanaka screamed. “Ah!”
The needle slammed into the wall behind him, and Tanaka’s scream echoed as his left arm, still wrapped in half a sleeve, hit the floor with a thud.

Lyra gripped Wraithslayer in her right hand, crimson dripping from the blade. She’d sliced the moment Tanaka made his
move.
Tanaka clutched his stump, stumbling back, his face twisted in agony, guttural sounds spilling from his lips.
Lyra glanced at him. ‘Figures. Of course someone would come after me, everyone knows I’m loaded with rare loot. There’s never a shortage of greedy idiots willing to try their luck for a payday!
“Miss Lyra! You, what you mean by this, ah?!” Tanaka’s voice cracked, his Draconian awkward and panicked/as he clutched his bleeding stump and stumbled back.
His voice went shrill as he kept yelling. “Me just want help you! Why you chop off my arm?!”
“Me good heart tell you news, why you attack me like this?” Tanaka wailed, still backing away, his words tumbling out in broken Draconian.
“Oh? Good intentions?” Lyra bent down, using the tip of Wraithslayer to flip the severed arm over. The cuff fell open, revealing a wrist guard with three needle ports.
“A good Samaritan’ coming to share news with me, with a hidden weapon up your sleeve?” Lyra said, her voice dripping with
sarcasm.
Tanaka’s mouth opened and closed, his face draining of color.
“Live by the sword, die by the sword,” Lyra said flatly.
She collapsed Wraithslayer and stowed it away. ‘When it comes to killing other players, it’s always safer to use the weapons the game provides, otherwise, who knows if the system will pull a fast one and not count it,’ she thought.
A glimmer of hope flashed in Tanaka’s eyes as he saw Lyra put her weapon away. There’s still a chance, she put her blade away, he thought.
‘If I can just scramble out of here, I might survive!’ the thought flashed through his mind.
But before he could even blink, Lyra was already right in front of him.
Lyra clenched her right fist.
A sharp click.
The spike from the Hidden Edge Ring snapped out, punching straight into Tanaka’s neck.
Tanaka’s eyes bulged, his right hand clamped over his neck as blood poured through his fingers. He stumbled back two steps, his lips moving, but he couldn’t get a sound out.
“You… you…” Tanaka stammered, his broken Draconian barely making it past his lips, but the rest of his words died in his throat.
He crashed backward, his head smacking the floor with a heavy thud, hand slipping away from his blood-soaked neck.
Lyra clenched her fist and gave it a quick flick, shaking off the blood from the spike.
The game’s announcement rang out, filling the room.
[Player Tanaka from Niphonia has been captured. Officially dead.]
“Clara, check his body for any items,” Lyra said.
