“And you? Did you ever love me?”

Elian’s deep eyes studied her for a long moment, a sly gent in them, before he turned the question back on her.

A sharp pain pierced Liana’s heart, but she quickly smiled, “Nope.”

She kissed him again.

Forget it.

Why dwell on this?

We’re parting anyway.

“Then who did you love? That ex who dumped you because of your mom? Or your colleague from school? Quentin?”

As she continued kissing him, he suddenly flipped her onto her back, pinning her down, his voice demanding.

“Are you jealous?”

“I’m your lawful husband, the one who can sign your surgery consent forms. Why would I be jealous?” Elian said, then gripped her chin and claimed her mouth in a dominating kiss.

Ever since her mother’s death, he’d had a terrible feeling-she was going to leave him.

The feeling grew stronger until tonight, when she climbed on top of him. It made him almost lose control.

“Call me honey.” Elian only stopped when her lips were wollen, his tone a command.

“Be gentle, and I’ll say it.”

“You’re bargaining with me?”

Elian was displeased.

But Liana just kept crying.

Some sharp woman once said, “A woman should know how to use her tears.”

“Fine, you win. Say it.”

Seeing her tears frustrated and unsettled him.

“Honey.”

“Mrs. Locke, you’re killing me.”

Hearing that soft, vulnerable word, Elian nearly lost all estraint.

They weren’t using protection. They were trying for a baby.

But afterwards, Elian would always clean her up. Tonight was no different.

Tomorrow?

Goodbyes, probably.

Later, Liana lay in his arms, letting him hold and kiss her. One last time, she asked, trying not to arouse suspicion, “If our divorce wouldn’t cause any trouble for the Locke Group, would you want to divorce me?”

She remembered the conversation she’d overheard at the club. He was afraid a divorce would affect the company’s stock.

So, what if it didn’t?

“You don’t want a divorce. Sounds more like you haven’t had enough.”

Elian suddenly rolled on top of her again. Cleaned up? I didn’t matter. He started over.

The next day, Liana was so weak she could barely get up

But she thought of her mother’s last words. She thought of her plans for today. She got up and went to the kitchen. She’d learned to cook for him, feeling he did too much for her. Cooking was her way of taking care

of him.

Back then, she thought it was killing two birds with one tone. They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Plus, it was a way to thank him for caring for her and her mother.

She never imagined that today, it would also count as filial piety.

It was the breakfast the elders loved, but she made it herself.

She even baked the toast Elian liked.

The elders were delighted. Linda looked at Liana with relief. “It’s good to see you’re pulling yourself together. But don’t do this yourself next time. You’re Elian’s wife, and we cherish you more than anything.”

“Okay. Thank you, Linda,” Liana smiled and agreed.

Elian, after sitting down and seeing the spread, stared at the toast on his plate. His expression darkened. He turned a cold gaze toward the woman beside him.

That premonition of her leaving clawed at his heart again. He didn’t eat. He let out a cold laugh, stood, and walked out.

“Elian! Your wife made you breakfast. Where are you going?” Linda promptly questioned her son.

“Not hungry.”

Elian didn’t pause, his long strides carrying him away.

“That brat! I’ll eat it, my dear. Don’t be upset.”

Rosalind, worried Liana would be hurt, gestured for the housekeeper to bring her the plate.

The elders all thought Liana was simply thanking them for their recent support.

Liana was content to let them think that. After breakfast she drove herself to a law firm.

When Nathan saw her, his heart felt thin as a sheet of paper, sinking all the way down to his stomach.

Liana wore simple blue jeans, a white blouse, and white sneakers. Her hair, for once, was loose down her back.

She was easy to recognize. Nathan, who had been twirling his car keys as he walked in, froze the moment he saw her through the window. He stood there for a long moment before entering.

Liana sat quietly in his office. Glancing up and seeing him, she slowly stood.

Nathan found it strange. She was the bare-bones ‘type, not particularly smiley. Why was she so memorable?

But the thought that she was clinging to Elian, refusing to give him back to Anya, made him dismiss her. He walked in briskly. “What are you doing here?”

Liana asked politely, “Attorney Chase, did you draft a new divorce agreement?”

“Huh?”

Nathan thought he’d misheard.

“At the club, when I said I’d leave with nothing, you mentioned drafting a new agreement for me.”

Liana remained courteous.

After all, Nathan had carved out a formidable reputation in Alderidge’s legal world at a young age. She dared not disrespect him.

Nathan’s brows knitted together. “You serious?”

He walked to his desk and sat, swiveling his chair to face her.

He suddenly found her hard to read.

Was it because her hair was down, making her look fragile?

Or because her mother’s recent death made her seem pitiful?

Or maybe she was just trying to set him up.

Nathan put his guard up but couldn’t stop staring at her

“I’m serious. I just wanted to know how long it would tale to get the agreement.”

“You’re willing to divorce Elian? And take nothing? Liana, what’s your game?”
