Just as everyone was thinking Liana was pushing her luck, getting too full of herself, Elian suddenly stepped to her side. He slipped a casual arm around her shoulders and made the
announcement.
Liana looked up at him, puzzled by his statement.
Elian glanced down at her, his expression one of pure adoration. “This year, Grandma plans to throw you a big party.”
The guests stared, stunned. They’d all heard the rumors-Elian was divorcing his wife to marry Anya.
But the scene didn’t match the rumor at all.
“That vixen. Anya, Elian proposed to you first. He loves you. You have to get him back,” Cecilia whispered fiercely beside Anya.
Nathan and the others hung back, each lost in their own thoughts.
“You seem off lately,” Nathan remarked, eyeing Jett who stood by the window.
The
young Baird heir was usually a force of chaos, loud and domineering wherever he went. His recent quietness was unusual.
Jett gave a humorless laugh, his gaze drifting to Anya, who only had eyes for Elian. “Just suddenly feels pointless,” he replied flatly.
“Come with me to the study, Liana,” Lawrence suddenly said.
Liana didn’t respond immediately, not until Elian gave her shoulder a gentle, reassuring squeeze. “Go on.”
She instinctively met his eyes. At that moment, they held a steadying calm that made her feel, against all logic, that she’d be safe as long as he was there.
Besides, Liana also wanted to know what Lawrence had to say in private.
Helena chatted with friends by the staircase, watching father and daughter head upstairs. A flash of resentment crossed her face before she turned her attention to Anya and Elian.
Seeing Anya approach him, she allowed herself a small breath of relief.

“Close the door.”

Lawrence walked to his heavy oak desk before turning. His voice, as always, was mild, even with Liana.
Liana shut the door and stood near it, watching him silently.
“Your grandma says we’re the most alike. Maybe she’s right,” he mused, standing behind the old-fashioned banker’s lamp on his desk.
A sharp, bittersweet pang shot through Liana’s chest, hot and acidic. She said nothing.
If I’d met him as a child, had a moment like this alone, I would have run to him, not wanting a single step between us.
I would have climbed into his lap like Theo does with Elian and cried, “Daddy, why didn’t you want me?”
But now, all she could do was stand there, keep cool, and ask evenly, “What did you mean before blowing out the candles? Did Elian come to you about me?”
“He came to pressure me. Basically said if the Forrest family kept tormenting you, my time as Mayer would be over,” Lawrence explained, still with that congenial smile, as if discussing a minor inconvenience with a subordinate.
Liana stared, stunned. She couldn’t help asking, “When?”
“After your grandpa made you kneel. He subsequently influenced a few key investors to become less than cooperative with my office.”
Liana’s eyes grew heavy. She looked down, overwhelmed.
She hadn’t expected Elian to confront Lawrence on her behalf, let alone take such action.
But anger quickly mixed with the shock.
She’d told him to stop being good to her. If he’d chosen Anya, then he should’ve…
A soft knock interrupted.
Liana turned to see Elian pushing the door open a crack. His gaze immediately found her tear- filled eyes, and his expression darkened.
“What happened?” he asked, his voice low.
“Liana just learned how you’ve been protecting her. She’s touched,” Lawrence supplied smoothly.

Elian only gave Lawrence a cold glance before taking Liana’s hand. “We’re leaving.”
