It was Anya.

She stood at the corner of the hallway.

Having heard about Rosalind’s hospitalization, she had come specifically to be with Elian, never expecting to find Liana there too.

And they had been holding each other.

Since he wasn’t answering her calls, Anya steeled herself and strode out into the open.

The corridor was dead silent. The sharp click of her heels announced her presence before she even spoke.

Both Liana and Elian turned their heads toward her, their expressions cool.

“Elian, Liana, you’re both here. How is your grandma?”

Anya approached with a smile, sitting beside Elian on the bench.

Elian frowned. A strange unease washed over him. He started to stand, but Anya’s hand pressed on his shoulder. His brow knotted tight. He shot to his feet.

Liana was taken aback, thinking he simply didn’t want to sit next to her anymore.

A flicker of surprise also passed through Anya’s eyes. “What’s wrong?”

“Just stiff. What are you doing here?”

“I came to be with you. If I’d known Liana was here, I wouldn’t have bothered,” Anya said, her tone dripping with feigned awkwardness and apology for interrupting.

“It’s not too late to leave now,” Elian stated.

Both Anya and Liana stared at him, confused.

Liana was the first to stand.

“I’m actually not feeling too well. I’ll head back,” she said quietly. “If Grandma wakes up, just call me. Thanks.”

Yeah, I’m not sticking around to be the third wheel.

Seeing her actually sling her bag over her shoulder to leave, Elian immediately stepped

forward. “I’ll drive you,” he said in a low voice.

“Anya came for you. It wouldn’t be right for you to leave with me.”

Liana refused.

“It’s fine, really. Let Elian take you. I wouldn’t feel comfortable with you leaving alone this late,” Anya chimed in, also standing up.

Great. Now they’ve got my exit completely blocked.

Liana was already irritated-first the intrusion, now this. She took two steps back, a bitter laugh escaping her.

“Could you two stop with the fake pleasantries? Weren’t you always meant to be together? I’m stepping aside. Just stop putting on this act for my sake, okay?”

Her words were blunt.

“Liana, what are you talking about? As long as Elian hasn’t agreed to the divorce, you’re his wife. How could I be with him?” Anya’s eyes welled up with tears, her explanation pitiful.

“Elian, can you please handle your woman?” Liana snapped, too annoyed to reason with Anya. She turned her glare on Elian.

A hint of amusement flickered in Elian’s eyes as he watched Liana’s genuine, unfiltered frustration.

He slid his hands into his pockets, content to let the scene play out.

Yes, maybe it’s good for her to let it all out.

“Liana, it’s not what you think between Elian and me. We’re just…” Anya’s tear-filled eyes suddenly took on a shy, embarrassed cast.

“I said, stop your act. You hate my guts, and we both know it,” Liana shot back, angry that Elian wasn’t intervening.

“Liana, how could I ever hate you?” Anya looked on the verge of tears, the picture of wounded innocence.

“Because I’m the daughter of Lawrence’s first wife. Because I married Elian before you could, becoming his first wife.”

Liana ripped the facade away without mercy.

Anya hadn’t expected Liana to hit the mark so cleanly. A flash of pure, unguarded hatred

rossed her face before she quickly dissolved into tears again, shaking her head. “No, Liana, ou’ve got it all wrong.”

Humph.”

iana found her pitiful act utterly grating and just wanted to leave.
