Chapter 114 Heartbeat in the Lift

Elian said calmly.

Xander let out a helpless laugh. “So you never planned to divorce Liana in the first place. And…”

Elian heard his hesitation and gave him a look. “Go on.”

“You’re planning to cut things off with Anya for good?” Xander finished.

“Yes.”

Elian’s gaze settled on the old building in the distance. One of those little windows marked the apartment that had been his and Liana’s first marital home.

“Anya called me in the dead of night yesterday, saying she couldn’t get into Westhaven Estates,” Xander explained, revealing why he’d brought this up now.

“She can’t live there anymore.”

Elian’s eyes remained fixed on those small windows, his decision final.

Liana arrived at the hospital a little after seven a.m.

Linda had called to say Rosalind was awake.

But before she could see her, she ran into Elian, who was just coming out of the room.

He was still in last night’s suit. When he saw her, his brow furrowed slightly.

Liana’s heart gave an involuntary flutter, but she simply slung her bag higher on her shoulder and strode past him. “I’m here to talk to Grandma.”

“Didn’t sleep well last night?” he asked, his eyes on the faint shadows under hers.

“Mr. Locke, you’re so observant,” Liana replied without answering his question. She brushed past him, opened the door, and went inside.

Elian felt no pleasure at the backhanded “compliment.” If anything, a dull ache settled in his chest.

Sitting by the hospital bed, Liana saw the swelling around Rosalind’s ankle and couldn’t hold back her tears. “Grandma, I’m so sorry.”

“Don’t you dare apologize to me. I know it wasn’t your fault,” Rosalind said, reaching out with some difficulty to wipe Liana’s tears.

When Elian pushed the door open again, he saw his grandmother holding his wife, both of them in tears. He stopped instinctively in the doorway.

Linda, standing by the bed, saw her son enter. “Weren’t you heading to the office?”

“Waiting for Lucas,” Elian replied, but his eyes remained fixed on Liana’s figure.

Linda sighed inwardly but quickly turned her attention back to Liana. “Have you taken the medicine Mr. Nelson prescribed for you? You still look so pale.”

Liana remembered the packets of herbal medicine the Locke family housekeeper had delivered to her apartment a couple of days ago. She hadn’t touched a single one.

That so-called doctor hadn’t even been able to tell she was pregnant. How could she trust anything he prescribed?

Besides, she’d been up half the night; looking washed out was a given.

I should start wearing some makeup. It’ll probably help.

She made a mental note to find a store and buy some pregnancy-safe cosmetics-nothing fancy, just a cushion compact, some setting powder. She always wore a bit of lipstick and filled in her brows anyway.

“Roy is consulting here today. Take Liana to see him later,” Rosalind instructed Linda.

“Of course,” Linda agreed.

“Linda, Grandma, really, you don’t need to come with me. I haven’t even started Mr. Nelson’s medicine yet. And I have a class to teach soon. I just needed to check on Grandma and make sure she’s okay, then I’m heading out,” Liana hurried to explain in a gentle tone.

“Oh, can’t someone cover your class? Can’t we just focus on getting you well first?”

“If you get better, I’ll get better in no time. Besides, if I don’t keep an eye on those little demons in my class, they’re bound to get into trouble,” Liana joked about her students.

“I see. Your husband got into fights in middle school too, and I was called to the principal’s office more than once,” Rosalind said with a chuckle.

Curious, Liana glanced over at Elian.

“That was once,” Elian interjected flatly from the doorway, clearly not keen on having his adolescent misadventures aired.

Liana didn’t press for details. It wasn’t that she’d lost interest in his past; a sense of distance had simply settled between them.

Soon, it was time for her to leave. Lucas had arrived for Elian, so they ended up heading down together.

The elevator was crowded. Elian frowned at the press of people and, before the next wave could surge in, managed to stand in front of Liana, shielding her.

Liana instinctively looked up at him.

He stood like a tall, unbreachable wall, separating her from the rest of the world inside the metal box.

Ignoring the occasional curious glance, he simply looked down at her and asked, “Drive yourself here?”

“Mhm,” she answered, lowering her gaze.

Her heart began its traitorous, frantic beating again.
