One phone call, and her eyes went red as she obediently said she wasn’t coming.
“I’m hanging up now,” Liana said once the others were gone.
Elian still held his phone. “Liana,” he asked quietly, “which hotel?”
“The Grand Imperial.”
She glanced at the placard on the nightstand and answered.
“I’ll order room service for you. What do you want?”
As he spoke, he heard a knock at his own door. He carried the phone with him to answer it.
“Hey, handsome. Got plans tonight?”
“What are you doing here?”
Elian stared at the figure in a long dress standing in his doorway, his tone sharp with suspicion.
The moment Liana heard it was Anya, a sharp light flashed in her eyes.
Suddenly, she remembered running into her and her mother at the hospital that afternoon.
“I missed you! Who are you talking to? Don’t tell me you’re already looking for a lover behind my and Theo’s back the moment you leave town?”
Anya sounded playfully upset, then laughed.
Liana ended the call and turned to leave her room.
To hell with both of them.
Elian heard the dial tone, looked at his screen, and said coldly, “Go back to Alderidge.”
“I just got here! I was only joking,” Anya said from the doorway, not daring to step fully inside.
“I don’t appreciate jokes like that.”
He grabbed his suit jacket and, with long, purposeful strides, walked past her without a second glance.
Anya stood there, a lump forming in her throat.

She’d driven for hours to see him. Was he really not moved at all?

They strolled by the lakeshore. A cotton-candy vendor had set up shop, and the female teachers watched, reluctant to leave.
Quentin stepped forward. “My treat.”
“Oh, we couldn’t. We’re all grown women,” one teacher protested.
Quentin smiled, “Aren’t women forever eighteen?”
Chloe sighed dramatically, “Makes me regret rushing into marriage. Mr. Conrad is so much more thoughtful.”
Chloe had impulsively married a few days prior and was already filled with regret.
The jerk had pinned her down on the bed the very next morning, and her back still ached.
On the walk back, everyone held partially eaten cotton candy.
Liana hadn’t touched hers-it was shaped like a little bunny, too cute to eat.
Walking beside her, Lily remarked, “You sure you’re not having a boy?”
“Why?”
“They say cravings for sour mean a boy, for sweet a girl. You’re all about pickles and lemonade these days, avoiding anything sugary,” Lily pointed out.
Liana wasn’t so sure about the old wives’ tale. But boy or girl, it would be her precious child.
“Ms. Keane, isn’t that your husband?”
“Did he come with you?”
“It really is him.”
Lily and Liana, lagging slightly behind, glanced toward the man standing by the hotel’s front desk.
Liana’s gaze followed. Her feet seemed to be rooted to the spot.
“We’ll head on up, then.”
“Mr. Locke, so devoted!”

A few teachers teased him good-naturedly as they passed.

Elian offered a polite smile, his eyes quickly finding the figure at the back of the group.
Quentin didn’t linger either. Until Liana’s divorce was finalized, he wouldn’t make a move.
The smile faded from Elian’s face as he simply watched her.
“I’ll go up too. Talk it out, okay?” Lily whispered to Liana before leaving.
Liana hugged her jacket, the bunny cotton candy still in her hand. Her traitorous heart had already raced ahead to meet him.
Only about thirty feet separated them, yet it felt like oceans and mountain ranges stood between them.
People moved through the lobby, but their gazes remained locked.
Neither of them moved.
They just stood where they were.
They just looked at each other.
Both were dressed formally. Her long hair was sleekly tied back.
Only the cotton candy rabbit introduced a note of playfulness into the stately lobby.
Seeing she had no intention of approaching, Elian naturally began walking toward her, his jacket over his arm.
The moment she saw him move, Liana’s eyes stung.
