“Liana, you were way out of line with my mom. Go apologize to her. Now.”

Anya stepped forward, blocking her path, and pointed toward Helena, her tone commanding.
“Drop your act?” Liana asked coldly.
As for apologizing to Helena, that was out of the question.
“Liana, I’m serious. Go and apologize to my mom right now.”
Anya’s face stiffened, but she doubled down, her spoiled-rich-girl attitude flaring up.
“And if I don’t?”
“Then I’ll have to stand up for my mom myself.”
Anya raised her hand. Liana was faster, her fingers closing around Anya’s wrist just before the slap could land.
As Anya stared, startled by Liana’s speed, a new voice cut through the tension.
“Liana? Is that you?”
All three women looked over. Liam was walking toward them, dressed in casual black attire.
Liana released Anya’s wrist. Anya immediately took two steps back, rubbing her sore wrist and forcing a sweet tone.
“Oh, Liam! Sorry, just a silly little disagreement between us girls. Didn’t mean for you to see that.”
“No need for apologies, Miss Forrest,” Liam said smoothly, acting as a buffer. “Here to see Mrs. Rosalind Locke, Liana? Shall we go up together?”
“Yes.”
Liana nodded.
Liam gestured for her to go ahead, and they walked toward the elevators together.
Meanwhile, Helena quickly snapped a photo of their retreating backs with her phone. “Call that reporter. Let’s have dinner tonight,” she murmured to Anya.
“Okay.”

That night, Liana had just finished washing up and lay down in the guest room when Elian called.
“Hello?”
“Where are you?”
“In Coalton.”
She heard a knock at her door. “Hold on, someone’s at the door.”
On the other end, standing before the floor-to-ceiling windows of a presidential suite with the best view, dressed in a black dress shirt and trousers, Elian could only wait.
Liana, phone in hand, went to answer the door.
“We’re all heading to the lakeside for a walk. You coming?”
It was Quentin.
“Sure.”
“Grab a jacket. It’s chilly outside,” Quentin said, then noticed the phone in her hand was active. He fell silent.
“Okay.”
Liana turned back to get her jacket, putting the phone to her ear again. “I’m going out for a bit.”
“Liana, I don’t want you going for a walk by the lake with Quentin.”
Elian’s voice was tightly controlled, the product of immense effort to sound calm.
“It’s not just him and me. Eight of us came on this trip.”
Liana explained patiently, though the explanation felt pointless even as she said it.
They were getting divorced. She couldn’t control him, and he certainly couldn’t control her.
“Do
you have any idea that even with eighty people on a business trip, someone with ill intent could still find a way to ruin you? To bring shame not just on you, but on the Locke family?”
“What are you even talking about?”

Liana felt he was getting way over the top and hung up.
Elian stared at his phone, stunned. She’d never hung up on him before.
He immediately called back.

Liana didn’t plan to answer. Elian had to resort to a text, “Add me on WhatsApp. I’ll show you a video.”
A sudden, uneasy premonition gripped Liana. After a moment’s hesitation, she added him.
When he saw she’d accepted his request, a sour ache pricked his chest. He immediately forwarded her the video clip.
It was only three seconds long. But it was enough.
Liana stared, frozen. It was footage of her walking with Liam toward the hospital elevators earlier that day.
The caption overlaid on the video read, “Locke Group’s Young Mrs. Locke: A Secret Rendezvous with Her Husband’s Cousin?”
Elian’s call came through instantly. Liana answered.
Outside her room, Quentin waited patiently. Lily and Chloe had joined him, peeking curiously toward the door.
Standing by the bed, Liana threw her jacket down. “Nothing is going on between Officer Kane and me,” she said into the phone, her voice thick with suppressed anger and the threat of tears.
She couldn’t believe someone would stoop so low.
