“Is… is it serious?” the driver who had hit Elian asked nervously.

No one noticed Liana standing there, head bowed, looking like a child who’d done something terribly wrong.

“Doesn’t look like it happened today, right?” the doctor asked, seeing that both Elian and Liana remained silent.

“I’m fine. You can go,” Elian said, looking at the anxious man waiting by the door.

Liana also turned and nodded. “That was my doing. It has nothing to do with you. Thank you for coming with us. Goodbye.”

The driver looked confused but insisted, “But I hit him. Please, let me cover the hospital costs.”

He looked back at Elian. “I can also provide compensation for your recovery. Can we settle this privately?”

Liana finally took a proper look at the driver.

What a good guy. Not only had he not fled the scene, he was actively trying to make things right.

“Some impact to the leg, but no fracture. Just get plenty of rest over the next few days. No need for hospitalization,” the doctor told Elian and Liana after the driver left.

“Thank you.” Liana nodded.

The doctor smiled and departed.

Elian remained seated in the office, watching Liana quietly. “Can you take me back to my hotel?”

“Yeah.”

She called a ride and took him to FS Hotel, a seven-star hotel in Coalton, and up to the presidential suite on the top floor.

Elian’s mind was racing, trying to figure out how to make her stay.

As they reached the door, he could almost see her mentally rehearsing her goodbye.

He spoke first. “I’m feeling a bit dizzy. Could you come in and get me a glass of water before you go?”.

“Okay.”

She agreed. After all, she was the reason for his head injury.

Elian felt a flicker of satisfaction. He keyed in the passcode.

She wasn’t very strong. Wrapping both arms around his waist, she barely managed to support him into the living room.

His arm lay heavily across her shoulders. As he tried to sit down on the sofa, he shifted his weight…

Liana had already let go of his waist, but the momentum sent her tumbling down after him.

“Hmph.”

Elian let out a grunt, as if the impact had hurt.

“Sorry! I didn’t mean to-”

“Don’t move. It hurts.”

Thinking she’d lost her balance and fallen on him, Liana scrambled to get up, but his arms tightened around her, pinning her in place.

He said it hurt.

Liana went still, pressed against his chest, sharing the spacious sofa with him.

“Liana.”

“Hmm?”

“It really hurts.”

He held her tighter, his voice suddenly taking on a vulnerable tone.

Liana’s heart clenched in response, but she didn’t know where the pain was.

She managed to tilt her head back enough to see his long lashes. They were so long that it made her heart flutter just looking at them.

“Where does it hurt? Your head? Your leg?”

“Here.”

He took her hand and placed it on his chest-where, she now noticed, several buttons of his dress shirt had come undone.

Feeling the strong, steady beat of his heart against her palm, she recoiled as if burned, scrambling up and off the sofa.

Elian’s arms fell empty. A wave of loss washed over him, but he quickly masked it, simply watching her.

Liana stood up, straightening her clothes. “I’ll get you some water.”

“I wasn’t lying,” Elian said.

She shot him a glare but said nothing.

Elian simply let his shirt fall open further, revealing a large, raw abrasion across his chest.

Liana immediately sank back onto the sofa beside him, pulling his shirt aside to get a better look, her brow furrowed with concern.

“How did you get this? Why didn’t you say anything at the hospital?”

“It went numb when the ring you threw at me hit me there. Didn’t think much of it at the time.”

He lay back, his low voice tinged with something that made her feel deeply responsible.

When he’d been hit while going for the ring, his only thought had been to reach it, to keep it from rolling away-or perhaps, to keep something else from slipping away forever.

Elian didn’t want to dwell on the moment. He couldn’t stop looking at her.

The memory of her voice, urgent and clear-“I’m his wife”-echoed in his mind.

It was the first time he’d ever heard her introduce herself that way to others.

It might also be the last.
