Chapter 141 They’re Not for Me
She did still love him.
But love was sometimes the most useless thing in the world.

Her love wouldn’t earn the respect of her soon-to-be ex-husband. It would only make him think she was easy to deceive, easy to humiliate.
“See you tomorrow,” Quentin said, watching her silent figure. He offered a small, wistful smile, turned, and walked away.
Some feelings are just meant to be locked away forever.
Yet the moment he turned, he ran right into Elian, radiating cold.
Elian stood there, his coat gripped tightly in one hand, his gaze boring into Quentin.
Quentin said nothing, merely stepped aside and continued toward the elevator.

He knew his family’s standing was no match for the Lockes, but that didn’t mean he was inferior.
Inside her apartment, Liana came back to herself and moved to close the door. The wood met
resistance.
She looked up, her heart giving a hard thump.
Liana asked, “What are you doing here?”
“Can I… ask for a stomach pill?” he inquired after a heavy pause, a cryptic smile playing on his lips as he watched her.
Liana was baffled. He came from a hospital to her apartment for a stomach pill?
Were her pills magical? Better than the hospital’s?
After a moment’s stunned silence, she replied coolly, “I don’t have any.”
“Then a glass of water? Surely that’s okay?”
He sensed her intent to shut him out and pushed against the door.
She couldn’t close it, her silent struggle useless. Then she saw him-his forehead dropped onto
the hand braced against the door, his expression one of genuine pain.

She knew about his chronic stomach issues. It was one of the reasons she’d insisted on learning to cook properly.
He sighed, a sound of pure discomfort, and looked up. His eyes were bloodshot. “Just one pill. I’ll leave right after, I promise.”
Liana hesitated.
“Theo’s still at the hospital. I won’t stay the night,” he added, his voice strained.
She knew how important Theo was to him. Her grip on the door loosened.
“You leave as soon as you take it.”
“I swear.”
He sounded so sincere.
Without another word, she turned to find the medicine.
A sly glint flashed in Elian’s eyes, gone as fast as it came, swallowed by the pain as he followed her in.
She went to the kitchen, poured a glass of water, and found the pills.
He was sitting on her living room couch, one hand pressed to his stomach, waiting patiently.
She brought the water and pill over. He straightened slightly. “Thank you.”
She stood there, silently waiting for him to take it and go.
He swallowed the pill but still looked wretched.
Watching his face, she asked instinctively, “Is it very bad?”
“Yeah. Busy day, missed meals. Might be coming down with something too,” he muttered, his voice tight.
The words left his mouth, and his eyes darkened with immediate regret.
Liana, too, remembered Anya’s words at the party: “He just took some medicine.”
Elian glanced at her furtively, saw the connection click in her mind, and quickly changed the subject. “You didn’t like the jewelry?”
“Oh. Wait a moment.”

She turned and went to the entryway, carefully lifted the necklace and bracelet off the shoe cabinet into her palm.
Elian watched, then stood as she returned.
She held them out. “They’re beautiful. But they’re not for me. You should have them back.”
He didn’t speak, merely giving the pieces a dispassionate glance when she offered them. “You haven’t taken the earrings off.”
“Hold these first,” she said, placing the chains in his now-free hand.
She rarely wore jewelry and fumbled with the clasp.
Linda had put them on for her at the manor. After struggling for half a minute without success, frustration crept in.
Elian stood right in front of her like a ticking time bomb.
