One earring, however, was successfully removed. Elian held it delicately between his fingers, offering it to her.
It took Liana a moment to react before she quickly held out her hand.
But then she felt it-the faint, deliberate brush of his fingertips against her palm. A shiver ran through her, and she instinctively clenched her fist around the cool, glittering diamonds.
He moved to the other ear.
Liana held herself perfectly still, afraid even her breathing might disrupt him, biting her lower lip in concentration.
Elian saw the small gesture from the corner of his eye and suddenly leaned closer.
Startled, Liana immediately leaned back.
He watched her, his deep eyes probing. “What’s wrong?”
She looked up at his seemingly innocent expression, only feeling more flustered.
“Nothing,” she murmured softly.
She was practically screaming inside.
“If I’d known, I would have given you a pair every day back then. Put them on you myself, took them off myself. I’d be an expert by now, and I wouldn’t be so clumsy tonight,” he said in a low voice, his fingers carefully holding the delicate shell of her ear.
His words made Liana’s eyes sting.
“Liana.”
“Hmm?”
Perhaps it was because he spoke of a past that once held joy, she momentarily forgot the icy wall between them now.
“Happy birthday,” he said, his voice a soft rumble as he gazed at her.
Liana stared at him in surprise, her lips parting several times before sound finally emerged. “Thank you.”
Elian fell silent again, just looking at her. Then he lowered his head, drawing nearer.

When Liana realized he was going to kiss her, her body answered before her brain did.
It had always been like that before-one leaned in, the other responded right away.
But this time, she caught herself. Her neck, which had begun to elongate, retracted.
She remembered. They were getting a divorce.
Elian watched her retreat, then suddenly caught the back of her neck.
Liana looked at him, stunned. By the time she thought to speak, he was already too close.
If she opened her mouth now, her lips would meet his. She tried to pull back, but the disparity in their strength was too great; she was held firmly in place.
His lips descended, not hurriedly, but with deliberate pressure against hers.
Liana’s mind erupted into chaos.
She tried to push him away with both hands, but one was full of diamonds, and the other pressed flat against the unyielding wall of his chest-like a wisp of cotton against stone.
Elian’s kiss deepened gradually, shifting from a tentative touch to something more demanding, more possessive, as if he wanted to consume her entirely.
Liana grew breathless, her legs weakening. Just as she felt she might buckle, his arm tightened around her, and the kiss ceased.
He rested his forehead against hers, his voice a husky, strained whisper. “Liana, tonight, I want to be your husband in every sense of the word.”
“You said you’d leave right after taking the medicine,” she reminded him, pulling back to put some distance between them, her voice tinged with disbelief.
“Yeah. If you say no, I won’t force you. I’ll go right now,” he assured her, his gaze steady on her defiant, wide eyes as he calmly soothed her.
Liana couldn’t help but search his eyes, trying to discern the truth behind his words.
“Let me just get the other one for you. Then I’ll go.” He resumed the task of removing the remaining earring.
This time, Liana stood quietly before him, but she was holding her breath, every sense heightened.
The air around them grew thick with a palpable tension. His hands felt even warmer than

She felt the slight weight leave her earlobe and was about to exhale in relief when a sudden, unexpected warmth touched the curve of her ear.
He held the earring in his hand, but his lips had found the sensitive skin of her ear.
A flush instantly spread from Liana’s ear down her neck.
She wanted to pull away, but there was nowhere to go; she was surrounded by the heat of his presence, the sound of his breath.
She lifted her eyes, a protest forming, but the look in his gaze-intense, focused solely on her- made her forget everything. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs.
Just then, the timely ring of a phone shattered the moment. Elian’s gentle kiss stopped.
Liana immediately stepped back, turning to hurry toward the bathroom.
Yeah. She’d just been wildly, stupidly moved.
The way he looked at her felt bone-deep, like roots in his heart. It hooked her so hard she wanted to rip out her own hot, throbbing heart and set it in his hands, let him do whatever he wanted with it.
