A loud crash echoed as the door was flung open from the outside. In three long strides, Elian was in front of her. Before Liana could even register her shock, he seized her hand. “You’re coming with me.”

“What?”

“Anya says Theo is having constant nightmares. You’re coming with me to stay with him.”

“No.

Liana refused, planting her feet.

Elian turned, his gaze unwavering. “Yes, you are.”

“No, I’m not! Elian, put me down! Fine, I’ll go! I’ll go, okay? Just put me down! At least let me grab a coat!”

The moment she protested, he hoisted her over his shoulder. Seeing he was serious, she quickly capitulated.

Minutes later, she was seated in the passenger seat of his car.

It was well past midnight, the roads nearly empty. They reached the hospital in no time.

She had changed back into her own simple, comfortable clothes, which also conveniently hid the gentle curve of her abdomen.

Elian got out first and came around to her side.

Exhausted from the long night, Liana moved slowly. She had just unlatched her door when he was there, swinging it open and offering his hand.

That’s not necessary, Liana declined his assistance.

Elian didn’t argue, simply waiting patiently for her to step out.

The wind outside was strong. Her hair was pulled back, but a few stray strands whipped wildly around her face.

Watching those flyaway hairs, Elian felt an unexpected, tender tug in his chest.

Yes, Mrs. Locke is beautiful no matter what.

Liana pulled her coat tighter and started forward. Elian shut the car door and immediately caught up, sliding an arm around her waist from behind.

“Can you not touch me?” she asked, her body stiffening, forcing her voice to stay level.

“No,” he answered simply, giving her a deliberate look.

Too tired to argue, Liana let it go.

“How long do I have to stay?” she asked as they stepped into the elevator.

“All night,” Elian stated.

Liana’s eyes instantly welled up with frustrated tears as she glared at him.

She didn’t want to spend the whole night in a hospital.

She wanted a hot shower and her own warm, cozy bed.

She’d even bought a new electric blanket-it had just arrived, and tonight was supposed to be its inaugural test run.

But here she was, back at the hospital.

And he knew how much she hated this place. Her mom had passed here.

“But I promise, there will be a proper bed for you,” he said, his voice softening. He reached up, gently tucking the rebellious strands of hair behind her ear.

Some women looked severe or older with their hair pulled back, but she was the most tender, captivating sight he’d ever seen like this.

Yes, his heart beat for her.

Liana self-consciously smoothed her hair. “I don’t like sleeping in strange beds.”

“At least the man in it won’t be a stranger. Will that do?” he asked, his voice dropping to a low, intimate murmur.

Liana blinked, turning to look at him in confusion.

What… man?

Elian pulled her a little closer against his side, the words escaping almost involuntarily. “We’ll sleep together.”

“You promised we’d get a divorce,” she felt compelled to remind him, a hint of desperation in

her voice.

Elian looked at her, a faint, unreadable smile touching his eyes, but he offered no reply.

The elevator doors opened, and he guided her out.

Soon, they stood before the door to Theo’s private suite.

Elian raised his hand and knocked.

Liana glanced at him curiously. Since when is he so polite? It’s just Anya inside. They’re usually so…

close.

“Elian…” Anya opened the door quickly, a practiced smile on her face. But the smile froze and shattered the moment she saw Liana tucked securely under Elian’s arm.

Liana saw the flicker of displeasure in Anya’s eyes. For some reason, instead of pulling away, she found a perverse satisfaction in it.

“Liana, you came too,” Anya recovered swiftly, her smile returning, though it didn’t reach her

eyes.

“Mhm,” Liana responded with cool indifference.

Elian glanced down at her, a glint of approval in his gaze, then promptly ushered her inside.
