He noticed her just as he was gripping Anya’s wrist to push her away. Seeing Liana, he froze mid-motion.

Liana, however, simply looked at him with a faint smile. “Elian.”

His heart gave an odd little shudder.

Hearing the name, Anya turned and saw Liana. She immediately let go of Elian, leaning against him instead. “Oh, Liana, you’re here! Don’t misunderstand. Elian and I are just friends, fooling around.”

Liana gave her a cold, dismissive glance before focusing back on Elian.

“Elian, I came to ask you for a divorce,” Liana stated calmly.

Elian just watched her, his expression unreadably cold.

“I’ve fallen in love with someone else. I want to marry him,” Liana continued..

These were the lines Anya had given her, saving her the trouble of making up an excuse.

“Who?” Elian asked. A sly glint suddenly pierced the icy chill in his eyes as he lounged back on the sofa, watching her as if daring her to produce this person.

Liana was mentally scrambling for a reply the script hadn’t included dialogue here.

“It’s me.”

The voice came from behind her.

She turned.

Everyone in the vicinity looked toward the newcomer.

It was Quentin.

He had come after all.

In a simple black suit, he walked to her side under the collective stare.

Liana’s heart clenched. She hadn’t expected him to show.

Quentin gave her a reassuring smile and reached for he hand.

Liana looked down. She still didn’t want to pull him into this divorce battle.

If Elian held a grudge, Quentin’s career could be ruined because of her.

“Didn’t we agree to face any problems together?” Quentin murmured softly, more a reminder than a question, his eyes full of comfort.

A palpable chill suddenly radiated from Elian.

The vast ballroom fell completely silent. No one even whispered; all eyes were fixed on the scene.

“I don’t love you anymore. I want a divorce and to start new life.” That was all Liana finally said.

She couldn’t take Quentin’s hand. She just looked at Elian once more, then turned and walked away.

Some held up phones openly to record; others snapped pictures more discreetly. She didn’t care. She just didn’t want to implicate Quentin.

But…

“Mr. Locke, a man like you can have any woman you want. Your marriage to Liana has been over in all but name for a long time. I hope you’ll be gracious and let her go. Ms. Forrest is more suited to you,” Quentin said to Elian after Liana had left.

That night, Xander never showed up. Elian became the main event instead.

“Elian, are Liana and Mr. Conrad really together? What will you do? You care about her so much,” Anya asked, feigning deep concern.

Elian just smiled faintly at her words and said nothing.

On her drive home, Liana’s car broke down-again;

Quentin’s car pulled up slowly beside her. He got out and slid into her passenger seat.

Once he was settled, Liana said quietly, “You shouldn’t have come.”

“I wanted to,” was all he said before pulling out his phone to call a tow truck for her.

Liana felt a lump in her throat, her eyes heavy. She tilted her head back, staring out at the rain that had begun to fall. It was coming down harder now.

Someone, hidden in the shadows, quietly took pictures of her car.

The tow truck didn’t arrive until after ten.

Once her car was hauled away, Quentin drove her home.

It was destined to be a sleepless night.

He dropped her off and left. He knew why she wouldn’t go to a hotel with him-she was worried about retaliation from Elian.

But no matter how he thought about it, he couldn’t bring himself to stand aside and do nothing.

After her shower, Liana went to the kitchen to make herself a cup of warm milk. As she stirred it, her phone on the counter rang.

It was Nathan.

She’d forgotten exactly when she’d gotten his number, but she had it..

“Hello?”

“Open the door,” Nathan said.

“What?” Liana was confused.

“There’s something very important here. Need you to sign for it,” he replied vaguely.

“You’re at my door?”

“Yes.”

“Just a moment.”

She’d just noticed the time on her phone-past eleven ready.

Has Elian finally agreed to the divorce?

Her pajamas a proper matching set-were decent enough for a visitor, so she went and opened the door.

But before she could even clearly see Nathan’s face, a taller figure surged forward, blocking out the light.

It wasn’t divorce papers.

It was the man who should be giving them to her.

He stumbled through the doorway, nearly falling before Nathan grabbed his arm to steady him.

But…

“Who told you to divorce me?”

Elian righted himself, shrugging off Nathan’s hand, the looked down at Liana from his full height, his tone demanding.

“Mr. Chase, please remove this drunkard. I-”
