There were plenty of BMWs and Mercedes at the school gate, but Elian’s Rolls-Royce was the only one of its kind, quickly drawing everyone’s attention-including Quentin’s.
Liana unclipped her seatbelt to get out. Elian exited the car first and swiftly moved to her side.
His long legs covered the distance in an instant. He opened her door from the outside just as she was slinging her bag over her shoulder.
She looked up at him. He smiled, “It’s Xander’s birthday party tonight. I’ll come find you later.”
“Hmm.”
Liana thought for a couple of seconds before agreeing.
Just as she was about to step onto the school grounds, he suddenly pushed her back against the car and leaned in.
It was a cloudy day, the wind brisk. His hand cushioned her back against the cold metal, his warm body shielding her from the front.
Elian looked down at her, and seeing her curious gaze; a flicker of doubt crossed his mind-maybe this wasn’t the right place. But the impulse was too strong to resist.
“Something else?” Liana asked.
“Mm.” Elian’s voice was low.
He knew there was a pair of eyes on his back.
Liana watched him, puzzled, as a slow smile gradually filled his sharp eyes. Her heart tightened, her breath catching.
God, when he smiles like that, it really makes my heart flutter.
Unconsciously angry-at herself-she was still fuming when he suddenly leaned in closer. She snapped back to reality and instinctively turned her head away.
“Mrs. Locke, just one,” he murmured.
His fingers tilted her chin, and then his lips, cool from the wind, met hers. They warmed up instantly.
It was peak drop-off time. What had been a relatively smooth flow of traffic at the school entrance suddenly jammed up, horns blaring.
Quentin saw it, of course. That kind of entwining was legitimate and beyond reproach.
Liana’s mind buzzed. She tried to push him away, but he suddenly cupped her face, kissing her deeper.
Liar!
She cursed silently in her heart.
The wind whipped the clouds overhead, hinting at a coming downpour.

The world around them seemed to freeze. When he finally, reluctantly, released her lips, his voice was hoarse. “I’ll wrap things up as fast as I can tonight and come to you.”
Liana couldn’t help but look at him. In that moment, she was certain-Elian didn’t know she was invited tonight.
That evening, the grand ballroom on the top floor of the Locke Hotel was once again buzzing with life.
Anya had secretly gathered all of Xander’s friends-dozens of them-for a surprise party.
Anya stood at the center of the room in a new Chanel suit dress, her eyes quickly finding Elian seated in a corner. She immediately made her way to him.
Liana hadn’t dressed up, still in the pale suit from the day, a long caramel coat thrown over it.
She came alone.
She didn’t want to drag Quentin into this.
If you don’t love someone, why hurt them?
Quentin deserves someone who loves him back.
She walked in with determined steps but was intercepte halfway.
“Hey there, little beauty. That’s quite the grown-up outfit. You look familiar. Are you here alone?”
A handsome but cocky-looking guy sidled up to her, offering a glass of champagne.
Liana found him rude. She gave him a cold glance and scanned the room for Anya and Elian.
“This is the good stuff. Try it,” the guy wiggled his eyebrows, urging her.
“Sorry, I don’t drink,” she said flatly, her gaze finally catching the pair in the distance.
“Call the birthday boy and hurry him up. What’s the point if he doesn’t show?” Anya was saying, seated next to Elian.
Her hand rested on his shoulder as if by accident, the picture of intimate familiarity, Anyone would think they were close.
Nathan, who had been sitting near Elian, subtly shifted way at Anya’s move.
Jett, meanwhile, had been talking with people his own age by the window, though his eyes never left Anya. Seeing her lean into Elian again sent a fresh, sour pang rough his heart.
