Today it will finally be over.

She could feel he wanted this, too.

Fortunately, not long after, a middle-aged man in his forties, holding a travel mug, arrived. “Sorry about that, wasn’t feeling well just now,” he apologized sincerely.

“It’s fine,” Liana said, unable to complain. But when she sat back down, a nervous tension gripped her.

“You two submitted your paperwork a while back. What took you so long to follow up?” the clerk asked.

Elian seemed to be in another world, not speaking.

Liana instinctively waited for him to answer. When no sound came after a long moment, she glanced at him. Elian turned his weary gaze toward her.

Yeah. He looked so sick it hurt to look at him.

Liana felt a stab of pain seeing him like this. But she had to endure it.

They had already stepped one foot out. No point pulling back now.

A fever wouldn’t kill him.

“We’ve been busy lately,” Liana said, not bothering with detailed excuse.

The clerk didn’t press, just pulled out the documents for them to sign.

Liana quickly picked up a pen and signed her name.

The clerk, watching her sign so swiftly, couldn’t help but ask, “Seems like you’ve suffered quite a bit, ma’am?”

“No suffering. It’s an amicable split,” Liana said, her tone deliberately light.

She slid the signed document toward him and signed the next one.

Elian lifted a tired hand, waiting for her to finish with the pen.

After signing, Liana breathed a sigh of relief. Seeing he hadn’t signed yet, she looked at him.

“Pen,” he said, his palm open on the desk, his voice faint

“Oh.”

Liana snapped back, handed him the pen-then, for no reason she could explain, her chest twisted at the sight of the scar in his palm.

A deep gash ran through his hand.

Her heart trembled hard. As he leaned to sign, she couldn’t help but look at his face again.

The room was too quiet, a silence that felt like the end of the world.

Finally-

Thud!

“Elian…”

On the final stroke of his signature, he collapsed, slumping forward onto the desk.

In a premium hospital ward, Nathan, looking at the man still unconscious on the bed, said to Liana, “He walked out of your place that night and got drenched. You know how cold it is now, dead of winter. No wonder he spiked a fever.”

“What about the wound on his palm?” Liana asked, not challenging his statement.

“Anya tried to off herself,” Nathan said, a bitter smile touching his lips.

Liana’s heart skipped a beat. She turned to look at him.

“Ever since that night, Elian seemed to lose interest in everything. And then Anya showed up at his place with Theo. You know Theo’s fracture isn’t healed yet. Elian lost it and grilled her-asked if she’d been mistreating Theo. So Anya pulled a ‘I’ll die to prove my innocence’ stunt.”

The rest didn’t need spelling out.

Of course Elian grabbed the knife, scared she’d actually do it.

But he didn’t even wrap it afterward.

Just left it open, a deep, ugly cut.

Remembering it made Liana feel like needles were pricking her heart.

She didn’t say more. Not until the man in the bed stirred.

Both turned and moved closer.

Elian’s complexion was ashen. His eyes fluttered open slowly, gradually focusing on them.

“Liana?”

“I’m here.”

Her heart lurched. She instinctively stepped forward, bending down near him.

“Sorry to delay things for a few more days,” he said, then coughed again, a dry, painful sound that made her own chest tighten in sympathy.

Nathan watched his friend’s pitiful state with a helplessner sigh, then remained a silent observer.

“It’s okay. Get well first,” Liana said softly.

Elian didn’t speak again, just kept looking at her.

Under his gaze, Liana felt like she was being publicly dissected.

She slowly straightened up. “I should go. I have a class this morning.”

“Is Lucas here?” Elian asked Nathan.

“He is,” Nathan answered promptly, ready for any request.
