Anya had rushed to the hospital after getting a call. Spotting Liana in the hallway, she immediately bristled with rage. After staring at Liana for a few seconds, she suddenly surged forward, her hand flying.

Slap!

The sharp sound echoed. Inside the private room, Nathan flinched, instinctively looking toward the door.

“It’s all your fault, you jinx!” Anya’s shrill voice carried through the hall.

At the same time, Nathan watched as the man who had been lying sick and listless in bed just moments before suddenly moved. With startling speed, Elian threw off the blankets, stumbled to his feet, and rushed unsteadily out the door.

“Stop!”

Liana, caught off guard, felt her wrist suddenly seized. She instinctively looked at the man gripping her.

In that instant, she was so damn glad she hadn’t just pitied him.

Because now she had no doubt-whenever she and Any were both in danger, the one he would save would always be Anya.

“What happened?”

Elian saw the fiery handprint on her cheek, and his brow cinched tight:

Especially when he met Liana’s gaze-a look of utter disappointment and icy detachment—his heart gave a painful lurch. He released her wrist.

Tears pooled in Liana’s eyes, but they didn’t fall.

She’d stopped crying for him a long time ago.

She even managed a cold smile. “Your Ms. Forrest hit me. Are you going to hit me too?”

At this point, she expected nothing.

Her gaze on him grew colder, bottomed out into pure, jagged disappointment.

“Elian, I hit her first, but she cheated on you! She betrayed you! I’m mad for you, I—”

“Get out.”

Anya’s words were cut off. Elian turned his head, and the look he gave her was murderous. She instantly fell silent, fear dousing her anger.

He had told her to leave.

Anya trembled, tears streaming as she slowly stepped closer, wrapping her arms tightly around him from behind. “Unless you kill me, I’m never leaving you again

“I’ll return that slap.”

Liana looked at the two of them locked together, her face blank, then moved around them and walked

away.

Elian, still dizzy and weak, barely managed to stay upright.

He felt her getting farther, and out of nowhere, heat blasted through him. He barked, loud, “Liana!”

The entire hallway seemed to tremble with the force of it.

Even Anya’s arms, locked around him, shook, but she held on tighter.

Liana stopped but said nothing.

Elian pried Anya’s hands off his waist and moved her asile, then turned and leveled a cold, furious stare at Liana.

“If you dare lay a finger on her,” he said, his voice dangerously low, “your Mr. Conrad won’t just lose his job. He’ll be ruined beyond recovery.”

From the doorway, Nathan listened and couldn’t help screaming inside.

Great, just great. This is blowing up out of control.

Yeah-he had no clue how to fix it either.

Anya, however, looked at Elian with tear-filled eyes, overwhelmed. “Elian, I knew you cared about me!” She flung herself at him again, clinging desperately.

The breath Liana had been holding up-stubborn, brittle-collapsed under that one sentence like paper in

rain.

Yet, he pushed Anya away again. Then, step by slow, unsteady step-weakened by illness-he moved toward Liana with painful difficulty.

Finally, he stood firmly before her. “Try me,” he rasped.

Liana looked up at him, her vision blurred.

But right then, she was grateful she’d never sunk so deep she couldn’t claw her way out.

The man who said he never loved Anya, who told her she was his first, who called her his wife and asked for her love…

Thank God I didn’t fall all the way in.

A knot of hurt choked her, and it took a long moment before she could breathe again. Her lips moved, struggling to form words. “Don’t give me the chance. Or I will try it.”

Hearing her stubborn defiance, seeing her face-a mask of fury and humiliation held in check by sheer will -Elian clenched his fists and let out a cold, humorless laugh. “You’ll regret it.”

His expression finally settled into cold indifference.

Liana said no more. She turned and left.

When faced with power and influence, she was always helpless.
