Elian’s fingers, toying with the cigarette, stilled. His gaze, cold and detached, settled on Lawrence. “Even you yourself,” he said, each word deliberate, “would not be spared the consequences.”

Lawrence listened without further comment. He gave a single, curt nod and left.

Ever since he came back to Alderidge this year, his first target had been the Locke Group. It was his duty and obligation to steady the Locke Group.

That was public business.

In private…

When Lawrence’s car pulled in at home, Anya and Helena were already waiting in the living room.

The mother and daughter looked relaxed, but both were sweating bullets.

Lawrence’s secretary had attempted to contact Elian twice today. That afternoon, the Mayor’s official vehicle had been at the Locke Group headquarters, yet Elian had refused to see him. Tonight they finally met-and it went like that.

“Sir, you’re back.”

“Yes. Are they both here?”

“They are, sir.”

The housekeeper came forward to take his coat.

As soon as Lawrence entered the living room, Anya stood up, hands clasped demurely in front of her. “Dad.”

Lawrence stopped, fixing her with an icy stare that lasted a full thirty seconds.

Anya unconsciously tightened her grip on her own fingers, not daring to make a single movement for what felt like an eternity.

“Now you glare at us like daggers-all for that girl,” Helena, having endured enough, spoke up, relying on the backing of her own influential family.

“That girl? Who?” Lawrence walked over and sat beside her, his posture authoritative.

“Don’t play dumb with me! You slapped me just the other day, and now you’re pretending you don’t know?”

The faint imprint of fingers was still visible on Helena’s cheek.

Lawrence tilted his head slightly, examining the mark on her face.

A cold, humorless laugh escaped him, followed by barely contained fury.

“If you two, from this day forward, can stay away from Liana and leave her in peace,” he said, his voice low and dangerous, “then you can give me ten-no, a hundred, a thousand-slaps. As many as you like. Just aim them at my face. How about that?”

Helena drew in a sharp breath.

But Anya spoke up, “Dad, we haven’t been bothering Liana.”

“Keep pretending.” Lawrence retorted, his gaze shifting to her. “But do you think Elian will play along? Have you grown tired of being the Mayor’s daughter?”

“Dad, why are you saying that?” Anya’s voice took on a wounded tone as she carefully gauged his expression. “Do you truly want Liana so badly that you’d throw me out? Aren’t you afraid she’s just pretending to reconcile with you, only to seek revenge later?”

“If you keep this up,” Lawrence said, his expression one of utter exasperation, “this mayoral badge of mine will be stripped away sooner rather than later because of you.”

“If that day ever comes,” Anya shot back, her privileged temper flaring, “it’ll be because of Li-”

She cut herself off, seeing Lawrence rise from his seat, and suddenly lost her nerve.

Smack!

The next second, the palm connected with her cheek with stinging force.

“Lawrence!”

Helena leapt to her feet, shoving Lawrence back into the couch before rushing to inspect her daughter’s face.

“The more you protect her, the more I’ll hate her!” Anya cried, clutching her numb cheek. “If you’re so worried about your precious position, then fine! I’ll disown you as my father!”

With that, she turned and fled.

“Anya! Anya, wait!” Helena immediately chased after her

Half an hour later, Anya and Jett parked under the apartment building on Riverview Avenue.

“She’s not here,” Jett said, coming out of the building.

“Then she’s at the hospital. Let’s go.”

Anya fired up the car. Jett was right beside her, and she was dead set on fighting Liana to the bitter end.

She was certain Liana had gone to see Theo. And she was right.

Hearing that Elian had a business dinner at the club tonight, Liana had gone to the hospital with Lily to visit Theo.

A broken bone took time to heal. Though the little boy wasn’t fully recovered, he was eating and sleeping

well.

The nanny caring for Theo poured them coffee. Watching Liana feed him, she remarked, “Mr. Locke comes to see Theo every day and feeds him himself. With youwo raising Theo, he’s a lucky kid.”
