“I’m already helping you enough, you brat. If you don’t batch things up with her, I’ll have your grandfather bring out the family rules!”

Rosalind’s voice was sweet and doting, with a little threat tucked inside.

Of course she doted-this was her precious grandson, her only one.

Theo, not understanding their conversation, grew sleep and started rubbing his eyes.

Until Liana emerged from the bathroom.

“Ma’am!”

Theo immediately turned, picked up a perfectly shaped orange from his bedside, and stood up on the bed.

Elian and Rosalind moved swiftly to steady him. He stood at the edge, waiting for Liana.

“Careful! Don’t fall. Move back a little,” Liana hurried over.

Ugh! Why does her period have to show up now?

Should have brought a bottle of wine.

He watched her walk over, but it felt like she didn’t even see him-like he was invisible. A sharp twinge of sadness hit him out of nowhere.

At least she was focused on Theo now.

“Ma’am, orange for you!” Theo held the fruit out to Liana as she gathered him close.

Liana’s eyes warmed. She hadn’t expected the little boy to save an orange for her. “Did you save this specially for me?” she asked softly.

Theo gave a shy nod.

Liana’s heart melted. She leaned in close to his face.

“Then I want a kiss!”

She planted one right on his cheek. Theo giggled, his shoulders hunching up, looking as sweet as can be.

“Oh, look at those two!” Rosalind cooed, clearly touched

Elian, though, felt a twinge of jealousy.

His wife would kiss anyone but him.

“Mrs. Liana Locke, the supper Mrs. Rosalind Locke prepared for you is ready. Would you like it now?” The nanny entered, saw Liana, and came over.

“Of course, right away! Go sit on the sofa and eat,” Rosalind urged, suddenly remembering.

“Okay. I’m a bit hungry,” Liana admitted. Her appetite had been larger lately.

Rosalind, genuinely happy to see young people eat well practically shooed her toward the seating area.

“Can I have a portion too?” Elian asked, looking toward he sofa.

“Certainly! Mrs. Rosalind Locke brought plenty,” the nanny answered.

Soon, the couple was seated together on the small sofa ating supper.

Liana used to love cilantro, but now she was picking it out of her soup.

Elian watched, curious. “You used to love cilantro.”

“People change.” Liana replied evenly.

Elian frowned, thinking she was hinting at something. He chose not to bite, playing dumb, as if he hadn’t caught the subtext.

Rosalind chimed in. “You’re following your husband’s lead now! He’s hated the taste of cilantro since he was a little boy.”

Liana’s soup suddenly lost its flavor. This baby isn’t even four months along and already picking sides?

She suddenly suspected it was a girl.

Girls tended to take after their fathers.

Sons followed their mothers.

She thought about her recent cravings for sour things, while sweets-she could take a bite or two, then she was done.

Elian perked right up, but quietly sipped his soup. His smug little grin was written all over his face.

Rosalind chatted a while longer before leaving, taking the nanny with her. Elian and Liana saw them to the door.

Theo sat up in bed, his eyes

wide as saucers.

“Not sleepy at all, are you, kiddo?” Elian walked over.

“Bath time! Theo wants a bath with Daddy and ma’am! Theo declared.

“She’s on her period. Can’t play water fights tonight,” Elan reminded him.

Theo didn’t fully get it, but he seemed to know he couldn’t push it.

Liana made a show of tidying up, though there wasn’t much to do.

She just didn’t want to be alone with the two of them.

“Liana?”

“Hmm?” She answered out of habit.

When she turned, her gaze slightly unfocused, something in Elian’s heart stirred.
