Elian’s sharp eyes lifted. He looked at her wrist, then took it, gently pulling her to him until she was seated sideways on his lap.
“The Locke family has been doing charity for years. Do you really need me to beg you to help a victim of domestic violence get a divorce?”
Liana sat still on his lap, trying a different tack.
“The Locke family has done charity for years,” he said, his arm around her waist, his gaze serious. “But that doesn’t mean I have to help every single person who comes to me.”
Looking into his deep, intense eyes, Liana felt a twinge of disappointment.
His words made sense. Wealth didn’t mean he had to help everyone for free.
But…
“Then I’ll find another way,” she said, lowering her gaze.
“What other way could you possibly have?” he asked intently.
“I’ll figure something out myself.” She started to get up.
Elian tightened his hold, pulling her closer. His gaze dropped to her waist, almost unconsciously. “You’ve gained a little weight lately, haven’t you?”
“Mr. Locke, if you won’t help, fine. But now you’re judging my weight? Trying to humiliate me?”
Liana’s heart skipped, but she forced herself to stay calm and argue.
“Why would I humiliate my own wife?”
He found her reaction prickly but kept his voice gentle.
He was just thinking…
She was only 27. It didn’t make sense to have weight only at her waist and nowhere else, right?
Her job wasn’t sedentary.
“Starting tomorrow, I’ll take you to work out. How about that?” he suggested.
Liana’s face flushed instantly.
Wasn’t this humiliation?
He’s already acting like I need to hit the gym.
“I swear I wouldn’t care if you gained 60 pounds. But the point is, your overall health isn’t at its best. Starting
tomorrow-”
“If you won’t even help Chloe, who’s being abused, then certainly don’t need you to worry about a few extra pounds on me!”

Liana tried to get off his lap again, but instead of standing, she was pulled down, landing with him on the comfortable two-seater sofa.
Elian’s deep eyes watched her, patience unshaken. “Singe when did you become so rebellious?”
“Get off.”
She was even angrier now, but didn’t want to argue.
Yet even her simple demand to get off her went unheeded.
Elian just stared at her pouty face, leaning in closer. “Are you mad ’cause I said you put on a little weight? Or are you upset about your colleague’s divorce case?”
Liana paused, looking up to carefully read his expression.
Suddenly, she felt there might still be room for negotiation about Chloe.
Chloe’s husband seemed to have connections at a law firm, which was why he dared to be so brazen, demanding both the house and assets.
This city wasn’t small, but for ordinary teachers like her and Chloe, finding a reliable, powerful lawyer wasn’t easy.
“I’m more upset about Chloe,” she murmured, almost without thinking.
Elian’s lips parted slightly. After a long moment, he leaned forward, resting his forehead gently against hers. “Did I ever say I wouldn’t help?”
Liana thought it over. He hadn’t actually said no.
All he’d told her was to ask properly-and that he didn’t help just anyone.
But wasn’t that still a refusal? Just a polite, roundabout way of saying it.
Feeling their breath mingle, she turned her head away from his approaching lips, straining her neck toward the cooler air.
Only then did she whisper, “What would make you help?”
“Liana.”
He buried his face in the curve of her neck with a needy sigh, planting soft kisses there.
She didn’t know if it was the intimate way he said her name or the kisses, but goosebumps rose all over her skin.
“Stop kissing,” she whispered, pulling away.
He stopped, but his face stayed pressed to her neck. “I wanna kiss you.”
