The initial shock faded, and Liana immediately shoved at his chest. But Elian’s hand tightened on the nape

of her neck. The kiss, laced with whiskey, grew wilder, more desperate.

It wasn’t long before her struggles died. She went limp against the sofa cushions, surrendering to a kiss that felt devouring.

She lost track of time. When she finally gasped for air, Elian was still above her, his chest heaving.

In the cramped space, he rested his forehead against hers. His fingers brushed the wetness at the corner of her eye and stilled. Then, he began placing soft, apologetic kisses on her lips.

Liana lay there, numb, letting it happen, until he whispered against her skin, “Liana, tell me. Were you scared back then?”

He knew it. If he didn’t let her vent, she’d hate him for life.

Hot tears silently tracked from Liana’s eyes.

“What good would being scared have done?” she finally whispered, long moments later, sensing he needed an answer.

“I swear, I never meant to leave you

there.”

A sharp, desperate sense of losing her gripped him. If he didn’t make this clear now, he might never get another chance.

Leaving her alone there-he’d been more scared than her.

“Can you get off me first?”

Liana didn’t want to talk about it. He was crushing her, and she vividly remembered the signed divorce papers lying between them.

“Just answer me one thing,” Elian said, making no move to shift. “If I ended things with Anya for good, if I didn’t want this divorce… would you come back to me?”

He wanted to go back. Back to when she’d melt under his touch, blush at his teasing, and whisper “honey” in that soft, intimate way.

Liana almost laughed.

End things with Anya?

Even if he did for a while, they’d end up tangled again, no doubt.

Just like last time-he was dumped two years ago, but the minute Anya came back, he settled her into that mansion at Westhaven Estates.

“No,” Liana said, the word final.

Elian’s heart plummeted. The hand on her waist went slack. A low, self-mocking laugh escaped him. “Alright.”

He pushed himself off her, grabbed his phone, and headed for the door.

Liana remained slumped on the sofa. The sound of the door opening jolted her. She gripped the sofa back and pulled herself up. “Elian.”

He froze, breath held, scared to miss even a whisper from her.

Was she changing her mind?

She couldn’t want this divorce either.

She’d grown up

grown up in a broken family. She craved something whole.

“You forgot your son. And his things.”

Her polite reminder came from behind him.

Elian’s chest tightened with a bitter ache. He clenched his jaw, a humorless smile twisting his lips.

Pathetic. He’d actually hoped, like some desperate fool, that she’d ask him to stay.

Was their marriage of over two years really ending?

He turned to look at her, and sudden frustration surged.

Her gaze was too cold, too detached. They’d only signed the papers, and already she was treating him like a stranger.

She used to call him “Elian” so tenderly. Now it was “Mr. Locke” or the stark “Elian.”

He slowly closed the door again. His eyes sharpened. He turned and strode back toward her.

Liana, still on the sofa, watched him return, her heart launching into a frantic rhythm. “W-why are you back?”

He closed in. She quickly drew her knees up, pulling her legs away from the edge of the sofa

where he might touch them.

Elian bent down, his face close to hers, his voice a low warning. “Don’t wake my son.”

Liana held her breath, her eyes wary.
