He tried to kiss lower. Liana’s hand shot down to block him.

Elian let out a breathy, frustrated laugh, pressing his forehead against her chest as he wrestled down the fierce urge to just take her.

She was injured. She’d had nightmares last night. He couldn’t bring himself to push her any further.

Truth was, he only wanted to finish and let her crash. Every time before, she would pass out fast after they did it, clear and quiet.

But tonight, that wasn’t happening.

A moment later, the door creaked open.

“Daddy?”

The living room light was on, spilling a soft glow into the dark bedroom. Theo’s small, slight figure stood in the doorway, one hand gripping the doorknob as he peered at the two figures pressed tightly together on the bed.

Elian froze. Liana’s breath hitched.

Thankfully, his reflexes were sharp. He yanked the comforter up, covering them both.

He quickly slid his arm from under her neck and sat up. “You’re awake?”

“Daddy!”

Recognizing the voice, Theo shuffled into the room and immediately tried to climb onto the bed.

He was good at climbing, and the bed was low. As he started to haul himself up, Elian fumbled under the covers, his fingers deftly doing up the buttons on Liana’s pajama top.

Liana tried to swat his hands away, but she was paralyzed by a wave of mortifying shame at being caught like this by Anya’s child.

Theo quickly wiggled his way between them, forcing Elian to put some distance between himself and Liana.

Liana, clutching the sheet to her chest, tried to make a break for it. But Theo, seeing her move, simply rolled from Elian’s side to hers and clambered onto her lap.

Liana’s face burned crimson.

Theo stared up at her with wide, innocent eyes.

“Looks like he really likes you,” Elian observed, watching Theo’s fascinated gaze.

Liana’s heart pounded like crazy. Why would she care if Anya’s child liked her?

She tried to gently push the boy away, but Theo only wrapped his small arms around her neck and tried to burrow into her embrace.

What is wrong with these two?

“Elian…” Liana’s voice was a strained whisper, pleading for him to take the child.

Elian, not exactly thrilled with the situation either, swiftly plucked Theo from her lap. “This is Daddy’s wife. Only Daddy gets to cuddle her like that.”

The next morning, Liana woke in her own bed.

Theo had insisted on sleeping with her last night, so she’d waited until both father and son were sound asleep before sneaking back to her room.

The doorbell rang. She got up to answer it.

It was Quentin.

This time, he didn’t rush to hug her. He just stood there, looking at her whole and safe before him, and offered a grateful, relieved smile. “Thank God you’re okay.”

He’d only heard about the kidnapping from Lily that morning. She’d said Liana was badly hurt. Without a second thought, he’d rushed over, worry gnawing at him.

“Yeah,” Liana murmured, seeing the genuine concern in his eyes. She didn’t know what else to

say.

“Sweetheart, is that Evan with the shoes? Just let him in.” Elian’s voice, slightly muffled, carried from inside the apartment.

Quentin felt like an ice cube had been dropped straight into his chest. A moment later, he saw Elian emerge from the hallway.

He was tucking his dress shirt into his slacks-oh, and his belt was hanging loose, not buckled.

Quentin’s face flushed with acute awkwardness. “Lily said you’d been kidnapped. Since you’re alright, I should get to work.”

Liana, who had been glaring daggers at Elian for his little performance, quickly snapped her attention back to Quentin and gave a polite nod.

“Since you’re already here, Mr. Conrad, why not stay for breakfast?” Elian suggested smoothly, his long fingers finally fastening his belt as he stepped forward.

“Don’t trouble yourselves.” Quentin turned and left without another word.

“Hmph.” A smug, satisfied little sound escaped Elian once the other man was gone.

Liana couldn’t help but look at him again. Her gaze landed on his now-fastened belt, and an unwelcome flash of memory from last night seared through her mind.

She quickly looked away, anger bubbling up. “Shouldn’t you be leaving?”

“In a bit. Evan’s bringing my shoes.” Elian noted her irritation but was in too good a mood to

care.

Liana started to walk back inside, then paused, frowning. “Your shoes need replacing every day

now?”

“Mrs. Locke, you have always taken great care of me,” Elian said, the praise dripping from his
