He’d been giving her the cold shoulder since they arrived at the courthouse, acting like she was the one who cheated.

It left Liana feeling rattled and frustrated. She stood there for a long moment after his car drove off, a knot of unnamed emotions in her chest.

She’d taken a week off work. The morning’s ordeal at the courthouse dragged on past eleven. She decided to meet Lily for lunch.

They slid into a booth at a simple deli. Lily leaned in immediately. “Did you get his hair?”

“Theo has to be his son,” Liana said.

Lily shot her a look. “Hey, Ms. Keane, can you just give me his hair-or his toothbrush- anything works.”

“We started the divorce process today. Filed the application.” Liana changed the subject.

“He agreed?”

Lily jolted, then noticed Liana’s eyes were a little swollen.

“Yeah. He was cooperative. Probably doesn’t want to drag it out either.” Liana’s voice was flat.

“Is he in such a hurry to marry Anya? That’s all the more reason for the test! Imagine his face when he finds out the kid isn’t his! That’s the kind of poetic justice I live for.” Lily’s eyes sparkled.

Liana managed a weak smile. “What did he ever do to you?”

“He hurt you! Played the perfect husband for over two years, then bam! A little bastard out,” Lily said, her voice thick with indignation.

“Don’t call him that. Theo is sweet.”

Liana really didn’t think the boy deserved that word.

“He’s still a little bastard. Don’t go all saint on me.”

Lily thought Liana should be seething with hatred for all three of them.

“It’s probably the pregnancy hormones,” Liana sighed. “I just feel he’s cute. Yesterday, I wanted to kiss him a few times. But the moment I remembered he’s Elian and Anya’s kid, I made myself keep my distance.”

“Hormones, definitely. But please tell me you didn’t sleep with Elian last night? He cheats on you. How could you?”

Lily’s gaze zeroed in on a faint mark on Liana’s neck.

Liana flinched. “Of course I didn’t!”

“Then who left that? Not our dear Mr. Conrad, I presume?” Lily touched her own neck pointedly.

Liana stared at Lily’s hand, and it hit her-Elian sucking at her last night. She scrubbed at the spot he’d marked and muttered, “We didn’t do it. He just… took a few bites.”

Seeing how drained Liana was, Lily let out a sudden, aching sigh.

“You two were so good together. Made me want to be in love. And then, overnight, he turns into a total jerk. It’s hard to accept, even for me. Liana, do you still love him?”

“Love him for cheating on me?” Liana didn’t even look up.

Their sandwiches arrived. Liana focused intently on her food.

“Your face says you’re not over him. You-”

“How did your

date go last night?” Liana cut her off, steering the conversation away.

She wasn’t over him. But she was forcing herself to be.

“He’s a city clerk. Thinks that makes him God’s gift. Said he was ‘very impressed’ with me but hoped that after marriage, I could ‘manage’ to have a son for his family while studying for the civil service exam. So we’d both have ‘substantial pensions’ in our golden years.”

Thinking of that guy who wanted to plan her whole second half of life made Lily furious.

“Will you see him again?” Liana already knew the answer.

“See him? I’d rather swallow glass. Are all blind-date guy’s this selfish? Treating women like gold- digging time bombs.”

Lily snapped. She swore she’d never go on another blind date.

She was just 27. No need to rush.

But Liana, because of that line, suddenly thought of her and Elian’s blind date. He’d been one of the rare ones who wasn’t selfish. And still-he’d planted a huge bomb under her feet.
