With that, Liana walked further inside. Elian, however, continued to follow her.

As she passed through the living room, she thought she saw something on the coffee table. Her steps faltered for a split second, but she didn’t dare look. She kept going toward the study.

Once inside, she placed her bag on a shelf and pulled open the desk drawer. Where is the certificate?

It was empty. She opened the one below.

Still nothing. Then-

Click-thud.

A crisp sound of the door shutting.

Her hand still on the drawer pull, she looked toward the door.

Elian stood there, having nudged it shut with his foot. He hadn’t expected it to be so loud, but—

He lowered his foot, his posture relaxed, utterly natural.

“Why did you close the door?” Her heart began a frantic rhythm as she watched him approach.

“To do what needs to be done.”

He set the bottle of water on the desk.

His fingers were long, the knuckles defined and, she noted despite herself, distractingly attractive.

He walked around the desk toward her.

The desk was against the wall. She backed up until her own back met it, trapped.

Elian braced a hand on the wall beside her head. “It’s been more than two months since we fucked right here. Yeah?”

A rush of mixed feelings hit Liana.

She even wondered if she’d gotten pregnant that very day.

He’d returned early from a business trip. She’d been grading papers at this very desk, looked in surprise at the sound of the door, and he’d walked toward her just like this afternoon, and

kissed her.

“I have Anya’s number.”

Her palms pressed flat against the cool wall paneling. She took a steadying breath, trying to appear calm, though his proximity already made her feel breathless.

All those days and nights together had left deep, undeniable marks on her heart.

“Hmm?” Her mention of Anya clearly annoyed him.

“If you try to force me, I’ll call her,” Liana added.

“Are you blackmailing me?” A faint, ironic smile touched his lips.

His hand, however, had already come up to loosely encircle her wrist, his thumb stroking the delicate skin there.

A sense of helpless panic washed over her. Meeting his gaze, whether it was his height or the sheer force of his presence, she felt small and powerless.

“The doctor said Anya’s injury is near the heart. She can’t handle stress. Needs complete rest. So, I’ll make sure you’re too exhausted to lift a finger long before you get your hands on a phone.”

His body leaned in, closing the space between them.

“If you’re so worried about her, you should be the one by her bedside.”

Liana pushed against his chest, trying to slip away.

In an instant, both her wrists were caught in his

grasp, immovable.

The strength gap between men and women-why the hell was it so huge?

She didn’t understand it, but even exhausted, she couldn’t break free. Her previously evasive eyes lifted, glaring at him with anger.

“Elian, even if we’re married, you need my consent to have sex with me. Otherwise, it’s marital rape.”

“Mrs. Locke, I’ll make you agree.” His voice was a low murmur.

She didn’t know where his confidence came from until his hands gripped her waist. In the next moment, she was lifted and set down on the wide expanse of the wooden desk.

A gentle push against her knees, and he stepped between them, one hand instantly coming up

to cradle her back, preventing any injury and pulling her even closer against him.

Before Liana could even process the movement, she felt his cool breath mingle with hers. She gasped.

Seeing her instinct to recoil, Elian deliberately leaned in closer.

She leaned back. The hand supporting her back loosened slightly. Reflexively, her hands flew up and gripped his shoulders for balance.

“Bang!”

Elian’s free hand shot out, palm flat on the desk, bracing them. The other arm stayed locked around her waist, preventing any further backward tilt.

He’d only meant to startle her, anticipating this very reflex.

Liana’s face flushed, then paled. She was at a loss.

Letting go meant falling.

Holding on… felt too much like playing along.

Elian’s forehead hovered just a half-inch from hers, their breaths mingling in the charged space.
