Chapter 50 Another Online Witch Hunt

[How is this woman even allowed to work in education? She tore apart a perfectly happy family of three!]

[Liana is a gold-digging slut. Cancel Liana!]

[Liana, give up the “Mrs. Locke” title. If you don’t, you’ll get exactly what you have coming.]

Liana was still asleep. When her phone rang, she reached out on instinct.

A hand moved faster than hers, grabbed the phone, and answered for her.

It was Quentin calling.

“Liana, don’t leave home yet. Some hotheads might be waiting near your place to ambush you. I’m on my way.”

“Thank you for the concern, Mr. Conrad. But I’ll take care of my own wife.” Elian’s voice, cool and dismissive, came through the phone.

Hearing his voice, Liana blinked awake, puzzled.

He’d left last night. Why was he standing by her bed?

Elian held her cracked phone, watching her wake. She was still curled around the sleeping Theo, a picture of domestic tranquility.

Her first instinct was to check on Theo. Seeing him still asleep, she whispered, “I thought you were at the hospital with Anya?”

“Came back.” His gaze was contemplative.

“But I didn’t give you the new code.”

She didn’t ask about Anya; his calm presence told her it wasn’t anything serious. What she wanted to know was this.

Their old code was their anniversary. She’d changed it to the date she’d conceived.

“Spare key was in the drawer by the shoe rack, Get up and eat. I’ll drive you to work later.”

He offered the simple explanation, set her phone down, and left the room.

Annoyance flared.

Who does he think he is, going through my drawers?

And who asked him for a ride?

:

Remembering the call, she checked her phone-Quentin. She called him back.

Quentin, pulled over on the side of the road, answered wearily. “Liana?”

“Yeah. What’s up?”

“Elian will handle it. I overstepped.” He gave a defeated laugh and hung up before she could ask

more.

Puzzled, she slipped out of bed, leaving Theo to sleep.

Elian had made oatmeal. In the tiny apartment, the kitchen bled into the dining nook. He was ladling it into bowls.

The sight hit her with a wave of complicated nostalgia.

To any outsider, he was the perfect husband. She’d once cried happy tears watching him make breakfast.

She walked over, eyeing the takeout container of mini cinnamon rolls on the counter. She picked one up and took a bite.

Her favorite-cream cheese-glazed, extra cinnamon.

“Delivered about fifteen minutes ago. Should still be good?” he offered.

“Mhm.” She finished the roll.

She didn’t need him to explain; the quality was unmistakably from the Locke Group’s flagship hotel.

He’d registered her preferences with their chefs long ago. Meals were always tailored to her taste when she was around.

She decided to be pragmatic. A meal cooked by Elian was a rare thing. She might as well eat.

“What did Quentin say on the phone?” she asked finally.

Elian pulled out a chair and sat, calm as ever. “He said someone might try to jump you

outside.”

“Jump me? Why?” She was completely lost.

Without a word, Elian unlocked his phone, pulled up the news article, and slid it across the
