Chapter 51 Family of Four

“Eat first.”

Elian’s tone was mild. He placed the peeled egg on her plate.

“Even if not for Anya, you should think of Theo. He’s over two. He’ll start remembering things soon. Don’t you want him to grow up in a healthy, loving home?”

Liana had always thought divorce would be easy. Now she realized how naive she’d been.

Why wouldn’t he just let go?

Was it really as her colleagues suggested? Did he envision some twisted, modern harem with her and Anya under one roof?

“He’ll grow up

in a healthy, loving home. And in about a year, he should have a little sister. Our family of four will be very happy.”

His voice was a low, confident murmur.

“Right. But to have that ‘family of four,’ shouldn’t you finalize the divorce with me first?”

She latched onto his vision, steering it toward the crucial point.

Elian looked at her with gentle patience. “The family of four I’m talking about is you, me, Theo, and the little girl you’re going to have for us.”

“What are you talking about?”

Her breath caught, internal alarms blaring. That relaxed, all-knowing air of his-it felt like he already knew.

“You’ll be late for work,” Elian said, and as noise sounded from the bedroom, he stood and headed inside.

She didn’t get an answer. His words-“the little girl you’re going to have for us”-sent a cold shiver down her spine.

After breakfast, Elian drove her to school. Theo sat quietly in his car seat in the back.

At the school gates, Liana unbuckled and got out, assuming he’d drive off. Instead, she watched as he got out too.

“I can go in alone,” she said, glancing around.

The street seemed calm; the online death threats were probably just talk.

But Elian was already opening the back door, unbuckling Theo and lifting him out. He walked toward her.

“I’ll walk you in. I have some things to discuss with the principal.”

“Discuss what with the principal?” A sudden fear for her job gripped her.

“When you decide to trust me again, I’ll tell you everything.”

He smiled, gently brushing a stray hair from her forehead, his eyes urging her forward.

She walked beside him, her mind racing. God, he must love these cryptic half-answers. It’s torture for the listener.

The school grounds were crowded. All eyes were drawn to the trio, especially the striking man carrying a small child.

“Can you

walk separately from me?”

“Why would a family separate?” He seemed genuinely oblivious to the stares.

“When did we become a ‘family’? I don’t know what game you’re playing, Elian, but I’m telling you now, don’t even think about making me a free nanny for you and Anya.”

She quickened her pace and ducked into the faculty building.

Lily and Quentin were watching from the office window. As Liana scurried in as if escaping the plague, Lily teased, “Anyone would think you were a happy family of three.”

Liana just sighed. Who wants that?

She had her own family.

Her family was growing quietly inside her.

The thought of her own baby made her want to pour all her love into that one tiny life. Someone else’s son had nothing to do with her.

Quentin said nothing, leaning against the window frame with a pensive, lost expression.

Elian was in the principal’s office for a long time. When he finally emerged, Quentin watched him go, then turned to look at the woman now working at her desk. He walked over. “There’s something I’ve wanted to ask you.”
