However, she never expected that the baby’s arrival would coincide with the collapse of their relationship.
After fastening his belt, Elian took a moment to study her-the blush on her cheeks, the dazed look in her eyes. Satisfied, he left the room.
He went to call the doctor.
Even though it was past ten at night and pouring rain, the doctor would come.
But as Elian went to the kitchen to prepare a late dinner, he immediately dialed another number.
A man’s steady voice answered. “How is she?”
“Thanks to you, she’s not dead,” Elian replied, his tone flat.
“Anya grew up with you. For the sake of your long friendship, don’t hold this against her. As for my parents, I’ve already laid out the pros and cons for them.””
Lawrence’s voice was patient over the line.
Elian only gave a low, dismissive hum. “So, you want this matter swept under the rug? Just like that?”
“What else? She was only made to kneel for a few hours. You can’t possibly expect her own grandparents and sister to kneel and beg her for forgiveness?”
“And why not?” Elian countered coldly, pulling vegetables from the refrigerator and placing them in the sink.
“Mr. Locke, you proposed to Anya first.”
“I proposed to her. That’s on me. My wife shouldn’t have to suffer for it. Since you’re incapable of handling this properly, I, an outsider, will handle it.”.
With that, Elian ended the call.
On the other end, Lawrence sighed, clutching his phone as he stared gloomily out the window
at the rain.
“Dad, have some water. Don’t be angry.”
Anya came out of the kitchen holding a cup, her face still swollen from his earlier slap.

Lawrence turned and glanced at the cup, his voice icy. “Didn’t I warn you? Instigating your grandparents to torment Liana brings you no good.”
“She’s my sister. Why would I want to torment her? It’s just… Grandpa is still bitter about the trouble that woman and her child caused you after the divorce.
“He insisted on eliminating future problems,” Anya explained in a pitiful, low voice, placing her bet. A bet that her father would side with her.
After all, her mother’s family held significant influence, something Lawrence always considered.
“You’re saying Liana is pregnant?” Lawrence’s breath hitched.
“Yes.”
Hearing that, Lawrence fell silent for a moment before instructing, “Lay low for a while. Don’t cause any more trouble.”
“Of course, Dad. I’ll listen to you,” Anya immediately agreed, her demeanor obedient.
As he saw her so compliant and the swelling on her face, a pang of guilt struck him. “Anya, I didn’t mean to hit you. I’m sorry.”
Anya shook her head vigorously. “I know you did it for my own good.”
“No,” he corrected her seriously. “I did it for our whole family. If you can truly win Elian back, then he is family, and he won’t make things difficult for me. But if you can’t… with the hatred Liana holds for me, our entire family might face consequences.”
“She hates you? What right does she have to hate you?” Anya asked, baffled.
“There are things you don’t know. Just remember this-whatever you do, think twice. In our family, one’s glory elevates all; one’s disgrace drags everyone down. Understand?”
“I see, Dad. I’ll be careful in everything.”
“Good. Focus on winning a man’s heart, not on direct confrontations with Liana.”
As he said this, Lawrence thought of Anya’s mother.
He had to admit, she had been far more cunning than Anya.
That woman really had him wrapped around her finger.

Liana searched through all the women’s clothing in the closet, but none had tags. She then moved to the men’s section, where a dark green dress shirt still hung with its tag attached. She quickly took it and put it on.
