Chapter 72 His Hatred

A light rain fell all night.

Liana slept fitfully, half-dreaming she heard the electronic beep of a keypad.

In the morning, a notification on her phone jolted her fully awake-a security alert.

Someone had tried, and failed multiple times, to enter her door code last night. The footage was dark, the person’s face obscured.

A cold fear gripped her. Remembering the two previous abductions, she skipped breakfast and fled the apartment.

The building management was useless; the security camera on her floor had been broken for two years. She taught her morning classes in a distracted haze of anxiety.

“Are you feeling sick again?” Lily asked after class, concerned by her pallor.

“It’s not that,” Liana answered a beat late.

“Was it Elian giving you a hard time? But he seemed so worried when the Forrests took you.”

Liana sighed, “It’s-”

Lily thought it through and asked, “Did you tell him the paternity results with that kid, and he flipped and bullied you?”

“Someone tried to break into my apartment last night,” Liana explained.

Quentin, returning to the staff room, overheard and fel a jolt of concern, but remembering she wanted distance from him, he sat back down quietly.

“The Forrests! They won’t leave you alone!” Lily guessed

Without proof, Liana couldn’t be sure. But she couldn’t take risks, not anymore. “I’m going to the police station at lunch.”

“I’m coming with you,” Lily said right away.

They discussed, and after work, they headed straight to the police station.

At the station, an officer reviewed the logs. “Whoever it was knew what they were doing. Checked the camera was dead, covered the peephole. A pro.”

“Officer, we’re just two women living alone. You’ll protect us, right?” Lily put on a pitiful face.

“Of course. We’ll contact your building management about the camera and increase patrols in the area,” the cop said firmly.

“Thank you. Sorry for the trouble,” Liana said.

Afterward, they stopped at a cozy bistro for a quick lunch before heading back to school.

As they were leaving, a group descended the stairs from a private dining room upstairs. At the front was Elian, and-

Anya.

Anya looked drunk, leaning on Elian’s chest.

He wrapped an arm around her shoulders, trying to steady her, but failed a few times.

He finally gave up, murmuring with indulgent warmth. You know you can’t hold your liquor, yet you drink this much.”

“It’s my birthday! I was happy! And they kept pouring! Anya slurred.

She looped her arms around his waist, eyes still closed, and sweetly shifted the blame to the childhood friends behind them.

“Don’t let this happen again,” Elian ordered the group, his tone brooking no argument.

“Come on, man! Taking her side? We didn’t force her.” Jett complained, eyeing Anya’s flushed face with displeasure.

Elian just shot him a cold look.

“Liana?” Nathan’s voice cut through the noise.

Elian’s head snapped up, following Nathan’s gaze to the window seat where Liana sat, frozen. Their eyes

met.

Liana immediately looked down, grabbing her bag. “Let’s go,” she whispered to Lily.

“Disgusting.” Lily muttered, punching the table lightly before following.

Liana didn’t want to stay another second. “Let’s get out of here,” she said quietly, and walked ahead.

Lily followed, but at the door, she turned and shot the upstairs crew a glare before heading out.

Liana felt a bitter taste in her mouth. He hadn’t shown an ounce of concern after her “miscarriage.” yet here he was, playing the doting protector because Anya had few too many drinks.

The difference between being loved and not loved was stark.

Judging from how cozy he was with Anya, he clearly didn’t blame her for giving Liana the abortion pills in his name.

All his hatred was reserved for her.
