The possibility enraged her to the point of tears.

She’d rather accept that he loved Anya than that he’d given her those abortion pills.

“Am I insane? If I didn’t want a child with you, why would I have tried so hard?” he shot back, cutting her off.

The memory of those intimate, hopeful nights hung between them.

Elian reached up, wiping a tear from her check with surprising gentleness. “I just… I haven’t gotten past you ending the pregnancy.”

The admission was raw. The thought still felt like being flayed alive.

“You blame me? Why not blame the woman who lied and gave me the pills?” she asked, bewildered.

“You’re a rational adult. You can’t shift responsibility onto someone else.” His voice was restrained but firm.

The words, however quietly spoken, were a dagger.

A rational adult?

So that was why his anger was reserved for her.

“If you’d just admit you’re still hung up on Anya, I might respect you more. But this…”

Anger surged, and she began to struggle in earnest, wanting no part of his confusing touch.

As he tried to grab her wrists, she flailed, her nails accidentally raking across the side of his face.

Elian froze, his eyes flashing.

Liana froze too. She hadn’t meant to hurt him.

But a red welt was already rising on his cheek.

A flicker of fear shot through her, but she used his moment of shock to shove him away and scramble into her car.

Elian slowly straightened, his deep eyes fixed on her through the windshield as he took a deliberate step back.

Liana drove off, her hands trembling on the wheel.

Lily suddenly said, “I know it sounds crazy… but I think he feels differently about you than he does about Anya. More than believing he loves her, I almost think he loves you more.”

Liana couldn’t formulate a response. All the evidence pointed the other way. She drove the rest of the way to school in a tense, confused silence.

That evening, Anya hosted a birthday dinner at the Locke Hotel. She’d brought Theo, but Elian never showed.

Meanwhile, at the apartment on Riverview Avenue, Liana had just gotten out of the shower when her doorbell rang.

She tossed on a modest robe and opened the door. “Why are you here?”

“I was worried. About the person trying to get into your apartment,” he explained earnestly.

He hadn’t deliberated long after work. Her safety trumped everything.

Even though the building had fixed the camera, he’d decided to stand guard himself.

Touched by his loyalty after all their years of friendship, Liana let him in. Having someone else there did make her feel safer.

But barely past ten, a sound came from the door.

Both looked toward it. As Liana started to rise, Quentin gently pressed her shoulder back down. “I’ll get it.”

He walked to the door, picking up the rolling pin Liana had left nearby as an behind his back.

Liana checked her phone’s security feed, but the view was still obstructed.

Emboldened by having backup, she moved closer.

The electronic lock emitted a warning beep. They held their breath.

improvised weapon, hiding it

A frustrated sigh was audible from the hallway, followed by two firm, heavy thumps against the door.

The knocks weren’t frantic, but deliberate and unnerving.

Quentin glanced at Liana, then grasped the doorknob.

Liana clenched a baseball bat, squeezing hard with every thunderous knock.

The knocking stopped.

Quentin counted to three and yanked the door open.

Wham!

The door was shoved wide, and Quentin swung the rolling pin.

At the same time, a stronger hand seized the other end

“Trying to kill your husband?” a familiar, irritated voice demanded.

It was Elian.

He stood in a crisp white shirt, a black suit jacket slung over one shoulder, his other hand gripping the rolling pin. The rolled-up sleeves revealed the defined muscles of his forearm.

“Trying to get rid of me so he can take my place?” Elian growled at Quentin, his eyes blazing.
