Elian’s mischievous eyes flicked to the telltale blush now coloring her car. Only then did he release her.
Liana quickly turned, pressing her back against the wall her gaze defensive. “You can leave now.”
“Oh No thank you for the rescue?” he asked, looking down at her, his tone deceptively mild.
“Thank you.” She didn’t argue.
But Elian found her compliance hollow.
She used to spar with him. Now… her downcast eyes were just cold.
He had a sudden, fierce urge to throw her over his shoulder and carry her upstairs.
How hard can it be to thaw one woman?
“You’re welcome, Mrs. Locke.” The words were low, weighted.
Liana looked up at him, and for no reason, her heart began to hammer.
Stupid heart. Stop it. You don’t want this man anymore.
Without a word, she reached for the doorknob and pulled the door open. “I need to change. Mr. Locke, please step out.”
“Fine.”
He agreed immediately and strode out.
Liana leaned against the wall, exhaling slowly. She turned to lock the door again, but his head suddenly reappeared in the doorway.
Their eyes met unexpectedly. Elian held her gaze, his voice a low rumble. “If you’re going to lock it, remember to take the key out.”
Liana’s breath caught, her heart pounding erratically.
“Otherwise, your husband might think it’s an invitation Might come in and devour you whole.”
She stared, incredulous at his deadpan delivery.
“He’s been on a strict diet for too long. Can’t handle the sight of a feast right now.”
As he spoke, his gaze dipped briefly to the neckline of her dress she was clutching. His mind, however, was fixed on the image of her bare back-soft, fragrant, those delicate shoulder blades driving him to the edge.
Shocked into stillness, Liana finally remembered to breathe. She lunged for the key in the lock.
As she leaned forward, Elian caught an unintended glimpse of the cleavage she hadn’t fully covered. A sharp, frustrated breath escaped him, and he turned and walked away.
When Liana shut the door, his breathing slowly evened out.
Idiot. She’s my wife. It’s been over a month since the miscarriage. Why did I walk away? I should have gone in and just…

Since the truth about Theo came out, they’d only been together once.
And he’d forced that.
The few times since had been perfunctory, at her reluctant hand.
Now, she wouldn’t even give him that.
He leaned against the wall in frustrated resignation, memories of her past touch taunting him.
When she loved him, her hands danced over his skin. He’d felt her affection in every caress.
Now, she locked him out to change a dress.
The black dress she’d chosen was simple, knee-length, open-backed, and modest in the front.
Standing before the mirror, Liana felt strangely unfamiliar with her own reflection.
The last time she’d worn something like this was in college.
Cautiously, she opened the door a crack and peeked out at the spot where Elian had been standing.
He’s gone?
Relieved, she stepped out.
She didn’t expect Elian to be right at the doorway. She jumped. “Why are you standing here?”
“Where should I be?” His voice was a low growl of dissatisfaction.
Liana met his eyes, deep with unmistakable frustration, and had no reply. She lowered her head and walked past him.
Elian let out a soft, controlled exhale.
As she passed, her unique, subtle scent washed over him
If they were alone, he would have pinned her to the nearest wall, hiked up that skirt, and taken what he desperately wanted.
The simple dress suited her perfectly-elegant, cool, with an understated power.
It was far better than the youthful fluff.
