Liana couldn’t utter a single word. The tears on her face felt cold now, not the searing heat from before.
“Answer me, Ms. Keane. You’re the one who wants the divorce. Why are you the one crying?” His tone was deadly serious, almost pedantic.
Gradually, anger began to simmer in Liana’s eyes as she looked at him.
“Elian, you bastard,” she spat out, the words bitter and sharp like a wronged wife’s.
Why had he come back?
And why was he interrogating her like this?
Why did she want a divorce?
Because he had betrayed their marriage!
Why could he be so calm, so rational, so completely in control?
Why couldn’t she be like him?
Elian’s expression grew colder, darker. A mocking smile touched his lips as he tightened his grip on her chin, forcing her to maintain eye contact. His voice dropped to a threatening rasp. “Try saying that one more time.”
“You bastard, let go-Mmmph!”
Enraged, Liana tried to shove him, but he moved faster
Under the covers, his arm shot out and wrapped around her, hauling her effortlessly into a position that suited him.
He pinned her down, his mouth crashing onto hers in fierce kiss as his other hand worked on his own belt buckle.
The sharp click of the buckle made Liana’s temples burn. Her lips, already bruised from his earlier kiss, trembled as she pushed against him with all her strength. “Get off me, Elian! Don’t touch me!”
“Then it’s Anya. You choose.”
He paused, but every word dripped with control and domination.
The air in the small room seemed to freeze. Liana wen utterly still, stunned.
Elian pressed his advantage, his voice low and demanding. “Answer me now. Do you still want me to leave?”
“Get out.”
It took her a long moment to force the weak, brittle words out.
Elian let out a cold, short laugh. “Fine. I’ll go. I’ll go sleep with Anya, make more babies with her. I’ll spend the rest of my life with her. Then you can finally sleep soundly.”
The rest of the night passed in a torrent of rain.
Liana lay curled on the small guest bed, her silent tears soaking the pillow, until a small, warm body crawled

Elian never came back that night. He didn’t even send a text.
The next morning, before she left for work. Yvonne and Evan arrived together to pick up Theo.
Theo clung to Liana’s leg, refusing to let go. Liana felt intensely awkward. She wasn’t his mother; why was he holding on so desperately?
Still, she crouched down to his level, holding his thin litle arms gently. “I have to go to work now. You go with Mr. Scott and Ms. Yale, okay? I’ll play with you later.”
Theo seemed to understand, yet he didn’t, still trying to burrow into her embrace.
Evan and Yvonne watched quietly from the side. Both of them noticed Liana’s swollen, red-rimmed eyes- clear evidence of a long night of crying.
Neither commented, simply waiting for her to coax the child.

“If you don’t listen, I won’t like you anymore,” Liana added, her voice soft but her gaze sharp enough to scare a child.
Theo’s eyes instantly welled up with tears again. Oh, he was much better at looking pitiful than she was.

Seeing his little face crumple twisted something painful in Liana’s chest. She felt like a monster, bullying a child.
“I’ll always like you. But if I don’t go to work, I’ll get fired. Please?”
Liana tried a different tack, opting for a pleading, pitiful tone.
Evidently, playing the sympathy card worked better than threats. Theo reluctantly shuffled over to Evan.
Evan scooped him up with a smile. “He really is fond of you, Mrs. Locke.”
“He doesn’t need to be. Please, just take him. Thank you for your trouble,” Liana said, eager for Elian’s employees to leave.
Her eyes were dry and sore from last night’s tears; she needed a cold compress before facing the school day.
