“Okay, Luna. Why don’t you lay back and let me look at your side first.” She says with a professionalism that doesn’t leave any room for questions.

I lay back, and Austin stands beside me as Dr. Hadley lifts my gown. I hear Austin growl again. I guess the wound looks bad.

“Alpha, would you like to step out so I can finish my assessment?” she says sharply.

“Sorry, doctor. Please, continue.” Austin says. I feel him trying to get control of his emotions. I feel his anger. Anger in not protecting me or getting to me quick enough, but this isn’t his fault. This is all on that asshole Kaden. I’m glad he’s dead.

After she checks my eyes and lip and some other scrapes and bruises she smiles at me, “Well, Luna. You are healing up nicely. If everything looks good with the ultrasound, then I will release you from the hospital. However, you will be on bedrest until I see you again next week for a follow up visit, okay?”

“Yes, please!” I say, excited to be able to get out of here.

“Okay, let’s check on your pup now. I will be right back with the ultrasound machine.” She says.

As she leaves the room, I turn to Austin. “A pup! We are going to be parents Austin. How are you feeling about that, Alpha daddy?”

He smirks at me, “First, I like hearing you call me daddy. Second, I’m fucking ecstatic you are carrying my pup.’ Then his expression turned serious, “Rebel, you have to know that you cannot shift during a pregnancy or you risk killing our pup. I don’t know if you this or not, darling. It also means, if there is a battle, you are going in a safe room. I cannot risk you getting injured in a fight.”

I hadn’t even considered that I wouldn’t be able to shift or not being able to help defend the pack. It’s perfectly rational what he is saying but it’s making me emotional for some reason I don’t even understand. I start crying again.

“Shit. Rebel, darling, I know this is tough to hear, but your safety and the safety of our pup is my priority.” He says as he holds me.

I shake my head, “No. You’re right. It is perfectly logical. I don’t understand why I am crying.” As tears are rolling down my cheeks, the doctor appears with a large machine, smiling again.

“I heard the tail end of the conversation. Luna, your hormones are going to be all over the place during your pregnancy. You may become emotional, possessive, even unexplainably aroused. What you are going through is normal.” She says. I’m a little embarrassed that she said I would be more aroused, because I was a little while ago when I woke up.

“Alpha is correct though. Shifting can hurt or kill the pup.” She looks at me and hands me a book thoughtfully, Given your background with your education, I thought you might want to know what you can expect during a pregnancy. This is a book that explains everything with pregnancies and some of the do’s and don’ts.”

“Thank you. I guess I need to start reading when I get home.”

“Yes. That would be a good idea. Now let’s get you hooked up to this ultrasound machine and see if your pup wants to say hi!” she says excitedly.

She starts strapping me into the machine and explaining everything this machine can do and as she continues talking, I’m getting more and more excited. I feel Austin’s excitement too. He pulls up a chair beside me, ready for the show to begin.

As she squeeze some kind of gel on my lower belly, she turns the monitor towards us. She grabs something that looks like a wand and starts moving around my stomach. That’s when I hear a fluttering swooshing sound.
