His Plump Mate (by Buchanan) novel Chapter 225

Chapter 225

Rebel POV

I’m stunned. I wasn’t expecting to hear that today. “What do you mean you are leaving?”

“Perhaps, I need to tell you a little about my background. You have been asking me about my relationship with Dr. Higslee after all.” She smiled gently.

I’m confused. She is leaving because of Dr. Higslee. “If there is a problem, I will tell Austin and we will take care of it, Dr. Hadley.”

She laughed lightly, “No, Luna. It’s not what you think. My story with Steven is long and lonely.”

She’s finally going to tell me what the deal is with Dr. Higslee! I only wish I had a cup of tea, to drink while I listen to her story.

“Okay, I’m all ears.” I told her.

“Steven and I grew up together. We were inseparable. In our youth, we both loved studying together and would go to school events and pack house events together. Everyone in our pack knew we would be fated mates.” She started, “I am a couple of months older than Steven. So, when I turned eighteen, I shifted. I didn’t sense my mate at that time. Everyone became so certain that Steven and I were mates by then, that everyone was waiting in anticipation for Steven to turn eighteen to confirm what everyone was thinking.”

I had no idea their relationship goes back that far. I figured they may have met when they were studying medicine. But it seems like they have loved each other since they were children. “He shifted and you both weren’t fated mates?” I asked.

“No, Luna. He never shifted. Steven has gone his entire life, wolf-less. Without a wolf, you can’t sense your mate. Regardless, we loved each other and we wanted to be together. However, we both respected the mate bond. At the time, I was heartbroken. I was so sure he was my fated mate, but without a wolf, we couldn’t be absolutely certain.” She said wistfully. “At my parent’s urging, I went to study abroad. I guess they were hoping the separation would help me find my fated mate and forget Steven. They loved him like a son and didn’t treat him cruelly or anything, but I was their daughter, and they didn’t want me to be alone either. I agreed and told Steven, if his wolf ever surfaced to tell me, and I would drop everything to come back and find out if we were mates. We made a promise to each other, never to take a chosen mate, in hopes that we might be fated one day.”

“So that’s why you remained unmated.” I stated. Finally, understanding their attraction but they weren’t taking steps forward.

“Correct. One year turned to five years. Five years into ten, and now twenty-three years later, we have continued to love each other but respect the mate bond. Steven was still without a wolf, and I was still unmated. We both were until two nights ago.” She said.

“Two nights ago?” I was in the central council two nights ago, so what happened?

“Two nights ago, after working all day and night at the lab, I invited Steven to my place for a meal. The dining hall had long since closed. We were so involved with our work that we lost track of time. We had too much wine.” She said blushing.

Too much wine.I’mstarting to understand what happened two nights ago. I look at her and smile.

“Things escalated and well, I won’t go into those details, Luna. However, because of my inhibitions being three sheets to the wind, my wolf pulled forward and marked Steven.”

“So, you mated and marked, Dr. Higslee?” I said grinning ear to ear.
