I ran over to hug her, and she hugged me back. When I pulled away, she had happy tears and a smile across her face. Then she became serious again, even though the light in her eyes were still shining so brightly.
“This is why I’m leaving, Lama. After twenty-three years of waiting, I don’t want to wait anymore to start my life with my mate. Steven and I are thrilled, and his work keeps him in his pack. I can be a doctor anywhere, but he is in medicine as a scientist. His work is invaluable as you have already experienced for yourself.”
“Of course I understand! I just wish you didn’t have to leave while I am pregnant. I need time to find another doctor before I give birth.” I said as the realization hits me. Without Dr. Hadley, whom I trust implicitly with my health, who will be my doctor? Sure, there are other doctors at the pack hospital, but she is the chief medical director for a reason.
“I spoke it over with Steven. We both agreed, if you are willing, that I will stay onboard until you give birth, and 1 see you through the post-partum phase of the pregnancy. After that, we will leave. That way you have time to find someone, and I can train them and give them reign of the hospital after I leave.”
“That works. I certainly don’t want to detain you from your happily ever after, Dr. Hadley. I am going to miss you terribly though.” I said, getting emotional for the millionth time this week.
“I will miss you too. I will miss Blackstone. This has been my home for fifteen years, Luna. It seems wild that I am not going to uproot my life to move to an unknown pack. But I have no regrets, because Steven and I have waited long enough. Our parents that are older were thrilled to find out we are mates. They always held out hope that Steven would get his wolf, and we would be mates. They have always loved him. This is the happiest either of us has ever been.”
“You deserve every second of happiness, Dr. Hadley. You are an incredible person. You will be extremely hard to replace. You really are one of a kind.” I said, smiling with tears in my eyes. “We should absolutely celebrate this with the pack. We have to throw a going away party and have a HUGE cook out. I haven’t planned a cookout in a couple of months. This will give me such a wonderful excuse!” I said giddily.
Dr. Hadley laughs and hugs me, “Thank you so much, Luna. You are the brightest jewel in this pack. I hope now you understand why I didn’t want to talk about this with the Alpha present yet.”
“Of course. But don’t worry, I will tell him. We are going to have to get a job posting sent out soon. I hope you will help me with the job description so I can make sure I’m getting the details right.”
“Of course, Luna. Anything I can do to make the transition easier, just let me know. In the meantime, I hope you don’t mind, but Steven and I would like to stay in the same quarters, and he will be traveling between our packs at times. He can do most of his work here, but there will be conventions and speaking events that he needs to attend.”
“It’s absolutely fine, Dr. Hadley. I will let Austin know everything and we will work with the both of you.”
“That sounds great, Luna.” She said and then she looked at my stomach, “How about getting some bloodwork done and doing your check up now? I understand that you have been stressed in recent days and I would like to make sure everything is still okay with your pup.”
