I woke up the next morning. I washed my face, pulled my hair back, and put on my uniform, jeans, and a T-shirt. I didn’t eat anything last night. I’m starving this morning. I opened my door and saw Adrian standing there.

I sighed. “Good morning.”

“Good morning. I figured we could have breakfast together.”

“Aren’t you embarrassed to be seen with me?”

“What? No. Why would you think that?” he asked.

I scoffed. “Last night, you couldn’t be bothered to be anywhere near me or talk to me. This morning, you are outside my door, acting like you want to hang out. What changed? Mom scolded you for your manners or something?”

The tips of his ears turned red. My eyes widened.

“Oh. My. God,” I began. “She did scold you, didn’t she?”

“Yes, but not for the reasons you are thinking. I didn’t realize you didn’t eat anything last night. That was my oversight completely. I laid into the omegas this morning. I want to make sure you have a decent breakfast this morning. I don’t like knowing that I was that careless or that you went to bed hungry last night.”

He seemed earnest. He held his hand out. I sighed. Fine. Let’s see how this plays out. I grabbed his hand, and electric jolts shot up my arm. I sucked in a breath. So that’s what it feels like? Kaia told me, but this is more than she described.

I keep my facial expressions still, but I continue walking with Adrian to the dining hall. On the way there, my stomach growled twice. The look of remorse crossed Adrian’s face.

“I’m really sorry, Sinclair. I will pay attention from now on. I didn’t mean to be so careless.”

“It’s okay, Adrian. It’s not the first time I’ve been hungry,” I said seriously. He looked at me curiously.

He was about to ask something, but Thalia came down the stairs as we were crossing the main hall.

“Good morning!” she said, hugging me. Then she looked at Adrian seriously. “Good morning.”

Aiden followed right behind Thalia. “Good morning.”

My stomach growled again, and it’s embarrassing. Adrian spoke before anyone else could. “Let’s get you fed before your stomach crawls out of you to beat me.”

I barely smirked, but nodded.

We walked in together, and the room went quiet. I saw some people put their noses in the air and then looked mockingly at me. I don’t even know what that is about.

We sat down, and the omegas were quick to bring me a plate of food this time. Adrian narrowed his eyes at my plate and then looked at the omegas.

“Bring an extra bowl of fruit and some more eggs. You failed to feed your beta female properly last night. I'd better not see it happen again.”

Beta female. Not ‘my mate’.

‘At least he is speaking up for us,’ Mali said.
