Chapter 224 A Mother’s Longing

Chapter 224 A Mother’s Longing

Richard gently untied the apron from around Joanne’s waist.

“Honey, did you forget we have a guest?”

They looked every bit the affectionate couple.

Joanne laughed softly. “Of course not. Ms. Thorne is right here.”

She then turned to Jasmine with a warm smile.

“Hi, I’m Joanne-Richard’s wife. Though we’re not related by blood, we met years ago and just clicked, so we’ve considered each other family ever since.”

As she finished speaking, Joanne’s eyes lingered on Jasmine’s face.

Her eyes, her nose, her features…

She looked so much like her.

Jasmine gave a polite nod. “It’s nice to meet you, Joanne.”

Joanne came across as incredibly warm and welcoming.

“Let’s eat first-everything’s still hot. We can chat more after dinner. I made sure to prepare plenty of dishes you’d enjoy.”

Dishes she’d enjoy?

Joanne glanced toward Ethan.

“Before you arrived, Ethan texted me a whole list. He mentioned these were your favorites, along with a few things you can’t eat. I kept all of that in mind, so don’t worry there’s no pepper, chili, or anything like that.”

Jasmine felt both touched and a little embarrassed.

It was her first time joining them for dinner, and already she’d caused extra trouble. This was… well, it was a lot.

And Ethan-really.

She shot him a look that was half grateful, half reproachful.

Ethan simply curved his lips into a faint smile.

“Honestly, it’s more that I’m the one who likes those dishes. It’s been ages since I’ve had Joanne’s cooking, so I took the chance to treat myself.”

Joanne saw right through him but didn’t call him out.

The meal itself was relaxed and pleasant.

Sitting there in their home, Jasmine truly understood what it meant to see a marriage built on harmony and mutual respect.

Once dinner was over, Jasmine quickly moved to help clear the table.

Joanne stopped her gently.

“No, no-leave that to me. You two go relax in the living room. I’ll put some coffee on.”

Jasmine really didn’t feel right about it.

“Please, Joanne, let me help.”

“Really, it’s fine. Just make yourself at home.”

“But I-

Ethan chimed in lightly.

Joanne, why not let her give you a hand? Otherwise she’ll spend the whole evening feeling bad about it.”

Joanne chuckled.

“You young people. Just treat this place like your own home-there’s no need to feel indebted.”

For some reason, Jasmine felt an unusually strong sense of warmth toward this woman she’d only just met.

Joanne, too, found herself liking Jasmine more than she could explain.

Ethan added, “That’s just how she is always feels like she owes people something.”

Jasmine tilted her head to look at him.

Was there a deeper meaning behind the way he’d said that?

Joanne finally relented.

“Alright then, you can help me with a few light things.”

As the two women turned toward the kitchen, Ethan spoke up again.

Joanne, she’s pregnant. Don’t let her lift anything heavy.”

Both Jasmine and Joanne paused for a second.

Then Joanne recovered, her tone now playful. “Don’t worry, I will handle anything heavy. Okay?”

Ethan handed the gift bag he’d brought over to Richard.

Jasmine picked it out.”

Richard opened it, and his eyes lit up immediately.

Inside lay an ornate chess set inlaid with iridescent mother-of-pearl, its playing board fashioned from polished mahogany of exquisite craftsmanship.

What a beautiful find.

He couldn’t take his hands off it.

But someone with a sharp eye still caught the truth.

“Did she really pick it out… or did you pick it out for her?”

Ethan smiled faintly. “She asked me to pick it out for her.”

Richard returned the smile knowingly but didn’t press further.

He decided to let it slide.

Not a word was asked about Jasmine’s pregnancy. Instead, Richard began setting up the chessboard.

“Come on, let’s play a few games. Let’s see if you’ve gotten rusty.”

Ethan glanced toward the kitchen briefly.

“Alright.”

In the kitchen, Jasmine took the washed dishes from Joanne, dried them carefully, and placed them on the

rack.

Joanne opened her mouth a few times as if to speak, then hesitated.

Jasmine noticed and decided to break the ice first.

“Joanne, was there something you wanted to ask me?”

Joanne offered a slightly apologetic smile.

“There is, but I wasn’t sure if it would be too personal.”

Jasmine made a guess.

“It’s okay-please go ahead.”

Joanne paused for a few seconds.
