It was one in the morning when Mr. Perez finally called.

Winifred was asleep. Fearing he would wake her, Yvan quickly silenced his phone and stepped outside to answer.

"Yvan, we have something," Mr. Perez said. "The guy cracked under pressure and confessed everything just now. Turns out someone hired him to target Winifred."

Yvan's voice was heavy. "Did you find out who hired him?"

"Cornelia, also an employee at Zion Medical Center," Mr. Perez said. "I think she's Zebulon's daughter. Isn't Zebulon an old classmate of your father's? I hear they're pretty close. How do you want to handle this?"

Yvan lit a cigarette. "Handle it by the book."

"A friend?" Mr. Perez didn't buy it. "You mean a girlfriend, right?"

Yvan didn't answer. He wished.

"Ah, I get it. You haven't won her over yet," Mr. Perez chuckled.

Yvan ignored the teasing. "Just make sure those thugs are dealt with properly. Don't let them get out and retaliate."

"You know you can count on me," Mr. Perez said. "Based on their crimes, they're looking at a year in prison, at least."

After hanging up, Yvan finished his cigarette before going back into the room.

He walked quietly to the bed. Winifred was still sound asleep. Reassured, he turned and lay down on the sofa.

He was tall, and the sofa was too short. He had to bend his legs, making it an uncomfortable position, and he tossed and turned, unable to sleep.

In a hazy state, he thought he heard a sob. Yvan shot awake, realizing the sound seemed to be coming from Winifred.

He quickly got up and went to her side.

In the darkness, Winifred was curled into a ball, her brow furrowed in pain as she mumbled something.
