The previous Head of Dentistry had been promoted to Deputy Director, leaving the position vacant.
If Winifred became the new head, it would be a huge boost to her career, not just in salary but also in her future prospects for becoming a deputy director herself.
It was an incredibly tempting offer. Zebulon assumed her earlier refusals were just a negotiating tactic. Who wouldn't jump at such a great opportunity?
But to his disappointment, Winifred's face showed none of the excitement he expected. She just gave a weary, bitter smile. "Mr. Johnson, I told you, I will not use this kind of situation to advance my career."
"Dr. Spencer, this is a rare opportunity. Are you really going to refuse?" Zebulon asked, baffled.
While Winifred had a master's degree, so did countless others at Zion Medical Center. Without connections, climbing the ladder on merit alone was nearly impossible, especially at her age.
Winifred sighed. "To be honest with you, I plan on submitting my resignation after the new year. I don't intend to stay at Zion Medical Center."
"Why?" Zebulon was stunned, but then it dawned on him. "Is it because of what Cornelia did to you…"
"That's not the only reason," Winifred said. "In any case, I'm leaving, so your offers are meaningless to me. Please don't waste your time."
Seeing that bribery wasn't working and Winifred was about to leave, Zebulon quickly moved to block her path.
"Dr. Spencer, I'm begging you. Please let Cornelia off the hook."
His voice was pleading. "Cornelia is my only child. Her mother and I divorced when she was young, and I raised her all by myself. I know that made me spoil her. I know she's wrong, and she deserves to be punished, but as her father, I just can't bear to see it happen."
"Dr. Spencer, if you'll just spare her, I'll agree to any condition you name."
As he spoke, the eyes of the usually imperious Mr. Johnson began to well up with tears.
This Winifred… He, the hospital director, had humbled himself, apologized, begged, and offered her so much, yet she remained unmoved. It was only because she had Yvan backing her that she dared to be so defiant. Otherwise, how could a junior doctor like her dare to stand up to him?
And she claimed she was resigning? She probably thought that with the Brown family as her ticket, she didn't need a job anymore. Did she really think marrying into a wealthy family was that easy?
Zebulon snorted.
Did she think he was out of options? The Brown family was influential, but they were just merchants.
He had only been so conciliatory because his ex-wife's company was trying to secure a highly profitable partnership with the Browns. He didn't want to alienate them unnecessarily.
He had hoped that simply asking Winifred would resolve the matter peacefully.
But now, he had no choice. His daughter's future was more important. He would get her out of this, even if it meant making an enemy of Yvan.
