Around four in the afternoon, Zebulon's call came as expected.
Winifred answered.
He asked to meet with her to discuss the situation with Cornelia.
Although Winifred was planning to resign, she hadn't yet. And since Zebulon’s tone was polite, she agreed to meet him.
They met in a private room at a tea house.
Zebulon graciously poured tea for both of them, then raised his cup with both hands. "Dr. Spencer, please allow this tea to serve as my apology on behalf of Cornelia."
He drank it all in one go.
As the hospital director, he hadn't tried to intimidate her into submission. Instead, he had been respectful and offered a direct apology. As his junior and subordinate, Winifred couldn't be too harsh.
So she just smiled faintly and waited for him to continue.
Zebulon set down his cup and sighed. "Dr. Spencer, I know Cornelia has done many terrible things to you. I always thought they were just petty squabbles between young women, like that incident in the cafeteria. I've scolded her a few times, but I never took it seriously enough. This time, I never imagined she would be so foolish as to resort to illegal means to harm you. I am truly…"
His face was a mask of disappointment and frustration. "I am just so angry. If she weren't my only daughter, I would seriously consider disowning her."
Winifred listened quietly, without saying a word.
He considered the cafeteria incident a petty squabble? It was clear he'd always been indulgent with Cornelia.
Winifred gave a scornful smile. "Mr. Johnson, Yvan already told me about your offers. As for my career, please don't bring it up. I will not use something like this to advance myself. It goes against everything I believe in. As for Cornelia, she has provoked me not once, but repeatedly, each time worse than the last, and she has shown no remorse. In this whole affair, has she once offered to apologize to me personally?"
Zebulon was taken aback but quickly recovered. "Yes, she did! She said she's filled with regret and wants to apologize to you in person. But she's in custody right now and can't get out. As soon as she's released, I will personally bring her to you to offer a sincere apology."
Winifred smiled faintly. "Mr. Johnson, I know Cornelia's personality. She is not the type to admit fault so easily. You don't have to cover for her."
An embarrassed look flashed across Zebulon's face. "Dr. Spencer, I…"
"Mr. Johnson, please say no more," Winifred interrupted. "I understand your love for your daughter, but I have my dignity."
She picked up her bag to leave, but Zebulon shot to his feet. "Dr. Spencer, if you agree to let Cornelia go, I will promote you to Head of the Dental Department."
