How to Train Your Ex-Billionaire novel Chapter 146

She was jealous of how Winifred defended Joseph Collins, jealous that she loved him more than her. She was the one who had raised Winifred, so why did her daughter always feel so distant, as if she'd never truly bonded with her?

Meanwhile, the father she hadn't seen in over a decade still held such an important place in her daughter's heart.

Even after forcing her daughter to change her last name, even after badmouthing Joseph to her, she couldn't diminish the love her daughter felt for her father.

Winifred didn't want to talk to Queena anymore. She hung up and put her phone on silent.

After so many years, Winifred no longer harbored the childish fantasy that her father would come looking for her. She had accepted the fact that he had abandoned her.

But why did her mother always have to bring it up, always have to pick at her old wounds?

People say a daughter is a mother's closest confidante, but she and Queena had never had that kind of bond. She had never known what a mother's love truly felt like.

She didn't know what she was in Queena's eyes. If she was truly her daughter, why did she constantly yell at her without any regard for her feelings? If she was an enemy, why did she care whether or not she got married?

Perhaps their personalities were just fundamentally incompatible, fated to a constant cycle of affection and antagonism.

Overcome with sadness, Winifred buried her face in her pillow and cried silently. Eventually, her tears gave way to exhaustion, and she fell asleep without even thinking about dinner. She had no appetite anyway.

When she woke up, it was the next morning. Winifred turned on her phone and saw dozens of missed calls.

She checked the log. Two were from Queena. The rest were all from Yvan, a few of them placed as late as one or two in the morning.

What's wrong with him now? she wondered. Is he demanding his gift?

She called him back. The phone rang for a long time before someone finally answered.

There was only silence on the other end. "Yvan, are you there?" Winifred asked.

Still nothing but the faint crackle of static.
