A week had passed since Winifred submitted her resignation, but she still hadn't heard back from HR. She finally decided to call and ask about the status.
To her surprise, HR told her the letter was stuck with Mr. Johnson. They didn't know the specifics and suggested she ask him directly.
Suspecting that Zebulon was intentionally making things difficult for her because of Cornelia, Winifred marched to the director's office to confront him.
"Mr. Johnson, I'd like to know why my resignation hasn't been approved. It's been nearly a week," she said, getting straight to the point.
Zebulon, who was sitting behind his desk, looked up at her with a sour expression. "Dr. Spencer, that's a question you should be asking Yvan. He's the one who told me to hold up your resignation."
Zebulon was already at his wit's end over Cornelia's situation, begging for favors left and right. But the moment he mentioned the Brown family, everyone shook their heads and refused to get involved.
The Brown family had powerful political connections. Hogan's parents were decorated heroes who died in the line of duty; no one dared to cross them.
And right at this critical moment, Yvan had called to threaten him, demanding he block Winifred's resignation. He'd even said that if Winifred asked, Zebulon should tell her to go find him.
If Zebulon didn't comply, Yvan would leak the whole story about Cornelia to the press.
Zebulon had been so furious his face had contorted. Offending Yvan was the worst luck of his life.
Not long ago, he'd anonymously sent Yvan a few suggestive photos of Winifred with another man, hoping to cause some trouble for her and drive a wedge between them. He'd hoped that if they fought and broke up, he might have some leverage in Cornelia's case.
Now, he had no idea what was going on between them or why Yvan wanted to block her resignation. But one thing was clear: Yvan had no intention of letting Cornelia off the hook.
This infuriated Zebulon.
"What? Yvan told you to block it?" Winifred was stunned.
"That's right. If you have any questions, go ask him," Zebulon said flatly.
Why would Yvan block her resignation? Was he trying to stop her from leaving Zion?
Suddenly, she remembered what he'd shouted at her on the staircase.
"Winifred, you want to leave Zion? Don't even think about it!"
He stepped outside before speaking. "What did you say?"
"I said, why did you tell Mr. Johnson to block my resignation?" Winifred repeated, her voice sharp.
On the other end of the line, Yvan sounded infuriatingly calm. "You want to know the answer? Come find me."
"Yvan!" Winifred seethed. "What are you trying to do?"
"I told you. Come find me, and you'll get your answer."
Winifred gritted her teeth. "I'm free right now. Where are you?"
She was on her day off and had come to the hospital specifically to check on her resignation.
Yvan glanced at his watch. "I'm at my company. Come over."
