Time always seemed to fly. In the blink of an eye, more than three months had passed.
One day, Winifred came home from work and was surprised to see her next-door neighbors moving out.
She didn't think much of it.
Her apartment building had a lot of renters, so people moving was a common occurrence.
After the neighbors moved out, a new tenant quickly moved in.
Winifred ran into him once. He was a young man in a suit, overseeing some people who were renovating the apartment.
He smiled and greeted her, mentioning that they would be installing some furniture over the next few days and it might get a noisy. He hoped she wouldn't mind.
Winifred exchanged a few pleasantries and didn't give it another thought.
The noise from the apartment stopped after a few days, so she assumed the renovations were done.
After that, Winifred never saw her new neighbor again.
The door next door was always closed. Only at night would a light be on in the window, indicating someone was indeed living there.
Winifred’s building had two apartments per floor. The family next door had been a large one, with elderly people and children.
Every evening, that family would leave their front door open, and the sounds of cooking, talking, and children playing would drift into Winifred's apartment.
Winifred hadn't found it noisy; in fact, she envied their lively household. It was a stark contrast to her own solitary life, where she had no one to talk to after work.
But now, the hallway was completely quiet, without a sound.
She was sure she hadn't imagined it. It looked like a camera lens, and it was pointed right at her.
She couldn't believe that a young man who looked so presentable could be such a creep.
No wonder she never saw him around.
Winifred was terrified. Her first instinct was to move out immediately. But she had signed a one-year lease and paid a hefty deposit.
It would be a huge financial loss if she just left.
Should she call the police? But what if she was wrong? What if it wasn't a camera lens, or even if it was, what if he wasn't watching her? It would be so embarrassing.
Winifred thought it over and decided to observe for a few more days. Once she had concrete evidence, she would call the police.
