How to Train Your Ex-Billionaire novel Chapter 172

Winifred thought he had a point, but she felt a bit awkward about troubling Steven every day.

After all, they weren't that close.

Back in college, she had rarely spoken to him. He was always with his girlfriend back then.

Seeing her hesitate, Steven insisted, “Don’t worry about it, really. We’re colleagues and old classmates. If you’re in potential danger, of course I should help. Besides, I have a car, and it’s on my way. It’s no trouble at all.”

“Alright then, thank you,” Winifred said, finally accepting his earnest offer.

She was also genuinely afraid that someone might be stalking her.

“By the way, why did you and your girlfriend break up so suddenly?” Winifred asked. “I remember you two were together in college. That must have been seven or eight years, right?”

Steven looked down, his expression heavy. “We just weren’t compatible. After the initial passion faded, all our flaws came to the surface. We argued constantly, and eventually, the feelings just fizzled out. Breaking up was the only option.”

Winifred murmured, “That’s a real shame.”

Seven or eight years is a long time. Spending the best years of your youth on a relationship that goes nowhere is tough for anyone.

“Yeah, just a year ago, our families were even discussing marriage. But...” Steven sighed. “If you try to force an incompatible relationship, it just ends in a complete mess. So, breaking up was for the best.”

Winifred thought of her and Yvan, involuntarily clenching her hands. She lowered her gaze and said, “You’re right.”

After dinner, Steven drove Winifred home.

Steven smiled. “Winifred, if you had stayed in Riverside City after graduation, with your advisor’s standing, he could have mentored you. Your achievements would surely be greater than they are now.”

Winifred didn’t answer.

Choosing to go back to Zion had indeed been a foolish decision.

If she hadn’t gone back to Zion, she would never have met Yvan.

But then again, if she hadn’t met Yvan, maybe she wouldn’t have been able to completely move on as she had now.

She might still be trapped in that old relationship, crying secretly in the dead of night, remembering Yvan’s cold words and all the pain that came with them.
