Winifred gripped her fork, saying nothing.
Molly continued, “Rena probably couldn't accept it. Think about it—Dr. Lopez benefited so much from her father's influence. The moment her dad was out of the picture, he wanted to break up. She couldn't handle it and tried to kill herself by slitting her wrists. Luckily, they saved her in time.”
Winifred was stunned.
She hadn't realized there was such a complicated history between Steven and his ex-girlfriend. It wasn't just a simple case of incompatibility, as he had claimed.
“And here’s the most critical part,” Molly added. “Things are still messy between Dr. Lopez and Rena. He's determined to break up, but she refuses to let go and constantly harasses him. Not long ago, Dr. Lopez was just being friendly with another female doctor, and Rena threw a cup of coffee in her face right in front of their colleagues. So if you're thinking about dating him, you better be prepared.”
Winifred clenched her hand, her gaze lowered. “Dr. Lopez and I are just colleagues. I have no intention of dating him.”
“That’s good,” Molly said. “I’m glad you’re not interested. Otherwise, you’d be stepping into a whole world of trouble. No one needs that kind of drama.”
Winifred thought she should feel disappointed hearing about Steven’s past, but for some reason, she felt a strange sense of relief.
She no longer had to force herself to accept him.
Winifred quickly decided to draw a clear line with Steven.
So when he texted her that evening, she deliberately waited a long time to reply. When he called, she ignored it, only texting back later that she had been busy.
Far away in Wye, Steven sensed something was wrong but couldn't do anything about it.
He just wished time would pass faster so he could return and see what was going on.
Yvan, however, was in high spirits now that he had confirmation.
He knew things were likely over between Winifred and Steven.
For the past few days, aside from following her to and from work, he had spent his free time at a bakery, learning to make cakes.
He remembered that Winifred's birthday was in a week.
Back when they were dating, he had bought her expensive jewelry and clothes for her birthday. But Winifred hadn't liked them and refused to accept them. He'd gotten angry, and in the end, she had to coax him, reluctantly taking the gifts.
Steven’s brow furrowed. “Then how about we grab dinner? My treat.”
“I’m sorry, I’m not free today,” Winifred said, looking conflicted. “I have something else to do, so I’ll be going.”
Steven blocked her path. “Winifred, did you hear something?”
Winifred paused. “No, not at all…”
“I know you did,” Steven said with a bitter smile. “Will you give me a chance to tell you the truth myself?”
Winifred was silent for a moment before replying, “Why do you care so much about my opinion? I'm just your classmate and colleague.”
“You don’t know why I care?” Steven looked directly at her. “Winifred, I thought you understood how I feel.”
Winifred lowered her eyes. “I’m sorry, I think you’ve misunderstood.”
