Yvan didn’t look pleased by the flattery. He looked up. “That business with Steven, have you handled it?”
“Don’t worry, Mr. Brown. I’ve already arranged for someone to get close to Ms. Spencer. They’ll find an opportunity to reveal Steven’s true colors to her.”
“Speed it up,” Yvan said, his face grim. “I don’t want Steven to take another step closer to her.”
Fitch quickly agreed.
Yvan held out his hand. “Give me the phone.”
Fitch quickly handed it over with both hands.
“You added her?”
“Yes, I did,” Fitch confirmed.
“Alright, you can go.”
As if a great weight had been lifted, Fitch walked out. As he closed the door, he couldn’t help but wipe the sweat from his forehead.
That was terrifying.
Inside, Yvan picked up the phone, opened Winifred’s contact, and started scrolling through her profile.
She rarely posted anything, but three months ago, she had made one post.
It was a picture of a blue sky with white clouds, captioned: Forgetting all the pain of the past. Starting today, it's a new day.
Had she decided to forget him, forget everything about him, and start a new life?
A bitter feeling washed over Yvan.
Putting down the phone, he picked up a fork and tried a bite of the food Winifred had made.
He could still eat her cooking. Thinking of it that way, he should feel grateful.
“You’re so pretty, Dr. Spencer. The moment you arrived, all the single guys in our department lit up.”
Winifred was a bit overwhelmed and could only offer an awkward smile.
“Don’t laugh, it’s true,” Molly said. “I think both Lionel and Dr. Lopez are into you. Especially Dr. Lopez, I heard you two were classmates. Seriously, Dr. Spencer, which one do you think is better?”
Winifred blushed. “Molly, please don’t say that. They’re just my colleagues.”
But Molly continued on her own, “Lionel is okay. But Dr. Lopez… you should be careful with him.”
She leaned closer to Winifred and lowered her voice. “Dr. Spencer, you’re new here, so you might not know the situation. Did you know Dr. Lopez’s ex-girlfriend also works at our hospital?”
Winifred shook her head. “I didn’t know that. But so what if she does?”
Molly said, “Dr. Lopez’s ex is named Rena Zade. Everyone knows her. Her dad used to be the head of the dentistry department. Mr. Zade personally mentored Steven on a lot of his papers. Otherwise, how could someone with just a master’s degree secure national grants and get promoted to associate professor so quickly? But last year, Mr. Zade was forced to step down because of corruption. And not even six months later, Dr. Lopez wanted to break up with Rena.”
Molly paused deliberately before continuing, “Dr. Spencer, if you heard all that, wouldn’t you think Dr. Lopez is just ruthless? The moment his girlfriend’s family lost their influence, he kicked her to the curb.”
