He just didn't want to be discharged so quickly, because being discharged meant he would have to move out.
He didn't want to move out, but he couldn't think of a better way, so he resorted to this self-harming method to buy more time.
He never expected Fitch to tell Winifred, and he certainly never expected her to come and see him.
Still, he didn't want to pressure her.
He knew the issues of the child and her grandmother were a deep wound in her heart. How could he bear to cause her more pain?
As his thoughts swirled, there was a sudden knock on the door.
Winifred was in the middle of applying ointment to Yvan's back and couldn't get up, so she just called out, “Come in.”
The door opened, and to her surprise, Steven walked in.
He was carrying a fruit basket. Seeing Winifred applying ointment to Yvan, he paused in surprise.
“Winifred, what are you doing here?”
Winifred pressed her lips together. “He’s the one who saved me. Isn’t it normal for me to be here?”
Steven set down the fruit basket and watched her apply the cream. “That’s not what I meant. It’s just, it’s so late, I didn’t expect you to still be here.”
And personally applying ointment for him, at that. Weren't they exes?
Yvan had recognized Steven from secretly following Winifred before, but now he had to pretend he didn't.
Steven’s face darkened.
Winifred quickly interjected, “That’s enough. Steven, I know this isn’t your fault. Rena is an adult, and she’s responsible for her own actions. You don’t need to blame yourself.”
After all, Steven was the one who had helped her get the job at this hospital. She couldn't be too harsh on him, for both personal and professional reasons.
Besides, he and Rena had already broken up; he couldn't control what Rena chose to do.
Yvan felt a sour pang in his heart when he heard that.
It’s been a long time since she was this gentle with him.
At that thought, his expression grew even colder.
