“If you have no other business, Mr. Lopez, please leave. I’m not feeling well and don’t wish to speak much.”
Yvan turned his face to the other side and closed his eyes.
Winifred felt awkward. She stood up and said to Steven, “Let me walk you out.”
“Alright. Mr. Brown, please get some rest. I’ll be leaving now,” Steven said.
Yvan ignored him.
Feeling embarrassed, Steven had no choice but to turn and walk out.
Once outside, Winifred didn’t immediately go back in. She closed the door and said to Steven, “Steven, don’t take what Yvan said to heart. You shouldn’t be blamed for what Rena did. You don’t need to feel guilty.”
Steven looked remorseful. “No, Mr. Brown was right. Actually, Rena came to see me that day and threatened me not to be with you. But I didn’t take it seriously. I never imagined she would be this extreme.”
Winifred paused. “You can’t blame yourself for that. I was careless too. I thought if I just made it clear to her that we weren’t together, she would leave me alone.”
“Please apologize to your friend on my behalf,” Steven said. “I’m truly sorry.”
“Okay, I’ll tell him,” Winifred nodded. “You should go.”
Steven looked at her, hesitating. “Are you… staying here to take care of him tonight?”
Winifred was about to shake her head, but for some reason, she remained silent.
Steven immediately understood. “Winifred, are you planning to get back together with him?”
Winifred lowered her gaze, neither confirming nor denying it. She had no intention of reconciling with Yvan, but she could use this to make Steven back off.
Steven said, “Winifred, you two are not right for each other. You’re not from the same world.”
He had done some research before coming. Yvan was the young master of the Brown Group. He never expected Winifred’s ex-boyfriend to come from such a prominent family.
“Steven, don’t say any more,” Winifred said calmly. “Whether we’re right for each other is for us to decide.”
Steven clenched his hand secretly. After a few perfunctory words, he turned and left, looking dejected.
Yvan looked like a scolded puppy. “I was just worried you’d be deceived by Steven. He’s not a good person.”
Winifred sneered, “You seem to know so much about him, even how long he was with his ex. Was it you who told Molly to tell me all those things back then?”
Yvan paused. “It was me. But I had no ulterior motives. I was just afraid you’d be fooled by him.”
Winifred scoffed, “Afraid I’d be fooled? What if he were a good person?”
“If he were a good person, of course I wouldn’t interfere,” Yvan’s voice dropped. “I want you to be happy.”
Winifred gave a cold laugh. “Well, thank you for that. I also think I shouldn’t lose hope in love just because of one failed relationship with you. In the future, I’ll find someone suitable and enjoy what it feels like to be happy.”
Yvan said nothing more. The room fell so silent you could hear each other’s breathing.
Just then, the nurse came in. “Is the ointment applied?”
Winifred replied, “Yes, it is.”
