Winifred looked at his pitiful act, feeling a mix of pity and annoyance.
He was just too good at playing the victim.
"I'm not talking to you anymore. I'm hanging up!"
She moved to end the call, but Yvan quickly pleaded, "Don't hang up, Winifred. Let me look at you a little longer."
"What's there to look at? I'm busy right now, I don't have time to be chattering on with you," Winifred said, but she didn't hang up.
"What are you doing in Oakwood City? Didn't you just go back a while ago?" Yvan asked.
He was referring to her trip to sign papers for the Birch Hollow tourism development.
"You were in the hospital then, how did you know I went back…" Winifred frowned. "Yvan, did you put a tracking device on me?"
"Of course not! I would never stoop that low!" A flicker of guilt crossed Yvan's eyes.
He had originally planned not to tell her that he'd bought Birch Hollow for her, fearing she would be angry.
While he hadn't bugged Winifred, the manager in charge of the Birch Hollow project had given him detailed reports of her every move there.
Now that their relationship was progressing, he could have told her. But he suddenly changed his mind.
He wanted to develop Birch Hollow properly, restore her grandmother's house, and then surprise her, telling her he did it all for her.
Winifred would surely be moved to tears.
"Who knows with you," Winifred muttered. "You're the great Mr. Brown. I never thought you'd stoop to being a creepy stalker."
He even impersonated Fitch to chat with her.
What wasn't he capable of?
"I really didn't put a tracker on you. If I had, I wouldn't have just misunderstood and thought you were leaving me," Yvan said, awkwardly changing the subject. "Anyway, what are you doing in Oakwood City?"
Ever since he'd learned about Winifred's miscarriage and depression, he'd felt immense guilt for how little he knew about her and her family. He'd had her entire family, three generations back, thoroughly investigated.
The investigation showed that Winifred's parents had divorced when she was six. She lived with her mother but was raised primarily by her maternal grandmother.
As for her father, he had never paid child support and hadn't seen her in over a decade.
What Yvan found strange was that the only information he could find on Winifred's father was that his name was Joseph and he was a regular police officer in the Oakwood City police department over a decade ago. After that, the man seemed to have vanished without a trace.
Yvan had asked his contacts to inquire at the Oakwood City police department, but they came up with nothing.
Forced to leave it, he simply had people keep an eye out. He didn't know how Winifred truly felt about Joseph.
Her sudden trip to Oakwood City to see him suggested that her father still held a very important place in her heart.
But the fact that a man he couldn't find for years had suddenly reappeared felt strange. That was why he wanted Fitch to have someone keep an eye on Winifred.
